**95 Years Ago Today — October 6, 1931**

As reported in the Society column of the Redlands Daily Facts 95 years ago today, "Mrs. E. W. Shirk returned to Kimberly Crest after a most pleasant summer of travel, including an extended visit to her former home in Neenah, Wisconsin.

Before traveling to Wisconsin, Mrs. Shirk journeyed north to Vancouver and then continued on to Alaska. From there, she traveled eastward across the Canadian Rockies on her way to Neenah. Her return journey to Redlands was made by the southern route."

In 1931, such a journey from Alaska to Wisconsin was quite an undertaking; taking approximately 8 to 11 days, depending upon connections. First-class accommodations, including a Pullman sleeping car, would have provided comfortable accommodations, attentive service, and fine dining while traveling through some of North America’s most spectacular scenery. A first-class journey of this nature would have cost about $200 per person.

Following the death of her beloved mother, Helen Cheney Kimberly, in February 1931, an extended return to her family home in Neenah must have offered a welcome opportunity for reflection, familiar surroundings, and perhaps some measure of solace.

Kimberly Crest would remain Mrs. Shirk’s beloved Redlands home for another 48 years. She continued to live here until her passing at the age of 99 on October 15, 1979.

Nearly a century later, we can still imagine Mrs. Shirk’s remarkable journey — from Alaska, through the Canadian Rockies, back to the Wisconsin home of her youth, and ultimately home again to Kimberly Crest.

National Koi Day is celebrated annually each July 7th. This day honors the beauty, cultural significance, and longevity of Japanese koi fish. It encourages enthusiasts to appreciate what is technically a cousin to the common carp, learn about pond keeping, and share their passion for koi.

While koi is the common nickname, the official Japanese name for this ornamental fish is Nishikigoi, which means ‘swimming jewel’, and we couldn't agree more with that meaning.

Kimberly Crest is blessed to have a colorful array of koi fish in both the upper and lower ponds. Unfortunately, enjoying the koi at Kimberly Crest is not possible this year as we are closed to the public due to our renovation project.

So instead we would like to share this fun koi fact with you...
Koi fish always travel in groups of four. If attacked, koi A, B, and C will scatter, leaving behind the D koi. 🤣

We look forward to seeing you all soon when we re-open in mid-July!
