🎁 Help Spread Holiday Cheer!

The Winter Toy Drive is back, and we need your help to make the season brighter for local children and teens. Donations of new, unwrapped toys will support students and families throughout Lake Washington School District, with the greatest need for gifts for ages 13-18. The drive runs through December 10 and offers several ways to give, including monetary donations, shopping the Amazon Wish List or dropping off toys at collection sites.

Learn more, find shopping links, and view drop-off locations at the Lake Washington Schools Foundation website at lwsf.org/winter-toy-drive. Together, we can help ensure every child experiences the joy of the holiday season. Questions? Contact [email protected].

We are proud to announce our October Excellence in Action recipient: Clara Yamakawa, Multilingual Teacher at Twain Elementary. At Twain, Clara partners closely with classroom teachers to integrate language development with grade-level learning. She uses visuals, routines, background knowledge, and other strategies to make complex content accessible while maintaining high expectations for learning. She also shares instructional practices and co-teaches with colleagues, building capacity across the school and supporting student-centered learning environments.

Clara’s work reminds us of the value multilingual students bring to our schools. Developing proficiency in more than one language strengthens communication, builds connections across cultures and perspectives, and can support cognitive flexibility. Just as importantly, recognizing multilingualism as an asset affirms students’ identities, experiences, and the knowledge they bring to our classrooms.

Check out this video featuring the great work Clara is doing as we continue to highlight our exceptional staff in Lake Washington School District!

For 17 years, McAuliffe's 3rd-5th grade students have brought the iconic Thriller Dance to life. Turned into zombies, they rose up to perform for the rest of the students and some families, creating a fun and memorable celebration. The performance was part of the Fun Run prize assembly, where the school also announced the total funds raised to support students and programs.
