A Small Act, A Big Difference

Sometimes, a small act of kindness can make a lasting difference.

On Oct. 19 around 7:45 p.m., Redmond officers responded to a reported theft at an apartment complex in the 18300 block of NE 98th Way. A family reported that their daughter’s Razor-style scooter had been taken. Unfortunately, there were no witnesses or evidence identifying a suspect.

When officers learned the family couldn’t afford to replace the scooter, they found another way to help. Through the BlueBridge program, which is supported by grants and generous local donations, officers were able to provide the child with a brand-new scooter.

The smiles said it all. The child and her mom were thrilled to receive the new scooter, and a few RPD stickers to go along with it!

Moments like this remind us that community policing is about more than responding to calls. It’s about building relationships, showing compassion and letting the people we serve know that we’re here for them.

Want to help make moments like this possible? Your support of Blue Bridge helps local law enforcement make a positive difference in the lives of community members when they need it most.

🚗 It’s National Teen Driver Safety Week!

October 18–24 is National Teen Driver Safety Week, a campaign focused on helping teens build safe driving habits and reminding parents and caregivers that safe driving starts with good choices behind the wheel.

If you’re a teen driver or the parent of one, keep these important tips in mind:

• Always buckle up: Wear your seat belt on every trip, no matter how short.
• Put the phone down: Keep your eyes on the road and your hands off your phone.
• Slow down: Follow posted speed limits and adjust your speed for traffic and road conditions.
• Never drive impaired: Never drive after drinking alcohol or using drugs.
• Limit passengers: Too many passengers can create distractions for new drivers.

Parents and caregivers, talk with your teen about safe driving and set the example every time you get behind the wheel.

For more tips on talking with your teen about safe driving, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration: NHTSA: https://www.nhtsa.gov/teen-driving/parents-talk-your-teen-driver-about-safe-driving.

Safe driving is a lifelong habit. Start good habits early.

October is Pedestrian Safety Month, and we’re reminding everyone to do their part to help keep pedestrians, drivers and other road users safe.

Whether you’re walking, driving or biking, keep these safety tips in mind:

• Give drivers extra time to slow down or stop, especially in poor weather.
• Avoid distractions, including cell phones, when crossing the street.
• Wear reflective gear and carry a flashlight when walking at night.
• Always use crosswalks and sidewalks when available.
• Follow the rules of the road and obey traffic signs and signals.
• Watch for vehicles and look both ways before crossing.

A few extra seconds of awareness can make a big difference. Let’s work together to keep everyone moving safely through our community.

DFR Helps Locate Shoplifting Suspect

On Oct. 8 around 4 p.m., Redmond officers responded to a shoplift in progress at Home Depot on NE 76th Street. Store employees reported that a man had concealed a bike lock and was leaving the area on a bicycle.

Employees confronted the man outside the store, and he returned the stolen merchandise. The employees said they wanted to press charges.

Our Drone as First Responder (DFR) and Real-Time Information Center (RTIC) were deployed to help locate and track him. The DFR provided live aerial footage of his movements and location to officers on the ground.

The DFR followed the suspect to a gazebo at Marymoor Park, where he stopped and sat until officers arrived.

When officers asked what made him stop, he had a simple answer: He saw the drone and knew there was no point in running.

The man was taken into custody for theft and outstanding warrants.

Another example of how technology, our dispatchers and officers working together can help us quickly locate suspects and resolve incidents safely.

🚌 Oct. 19–23 is National School Bus Safety Week!

Help keep students safe by following these important school bus safety laws:

• Stop completely when a bus has its stop-arm extended and red lights flashing.
• Never pass a stopped school bus.
• Slow down and prepare to stop when yellow lights are flashing.
• Remember that vehicles traveling in the same direction as the bus must stop, regardless of their lane. On two-lane roads without a median, vehicles traveling in the opposite direction must also stop.
• Be aware of the “Danger Zone” around the bus where the driver may not be able to see students.

Be patient. Be alert. Be the reason a student gets home safely.

🎃 Halloween is almost here!

Redmond Police Department wants everyone to have a fun, safe and spooktacular Halloween. Follow these safety tips and watch our video for even more ways to keep your family and community safe:

• Be visible: Carry a flashlight or wear reflective clothing, especially after dark.
• Use crosswalks: Look both ways before crossing the street and remind kids to stay on sidewalks whenever possible.
• Slow down: Drivers should watch carefully for pedestrians, especially in neighborhoods and near crosswalks.
• Check treats: Parents should inspect candy and treats before children eat them.
• Stay together: Young children should be accompanied by an adult while trick-or-treating.
• Be careful with costumes: Avoid costumes that drag on the ground or obstruct vision, and use battery-powered lights or glow sticks.
• Don't drink and drive on Halloween or anytime: Choose a sober driver or call a rideshare if you've been drinking.

We'll have extra patrols throughout Halloween, so please do your part to help keep everyone safe.
