DE Center for the Inland Bays OUR MISSION: To preserve, protect, and restore Delaware’s Inland Bays and their watershed.

If you live or vacation in south coastal Delaware…the Inland Bays are the Bays in Your Backyard. Three shallow bays- Rehoboth Bay, Indian River Bay and Little Assawoman Bay– lie just behind a narrow spit of land in sight and sound of the Atlantic Ocean. The bays serve as the backbone of Delaware’s coastal resort area stretching from Cape Henlopen to the north at the mouth of the Delaware Bay to the Town of Fenwick Island at the Maryland state line to the south. The watershed area also extends west to the headwater streams of Indian River and other tributaries, and the farm fields, millponds and marshes of Sussex County, Delaware.

The Fall 2026 Inland Bays Journal is here! 📖

What does it mean to build a more resilient Inland Bays watershed?

In this issue, we're exploring resilience from many angles—from Delaware's new wetlands protections and the role wetlands play in protecting our communities, to the science behind carbon storage in our salt marshes. You'll also meet some of the dedicated volunteers who give their time to the Bays and take a look back at the Resilient Earth, Resilient Communities exhibit at the Preserve.

Inside, you'll find stories about the science, people, places, and projects working together to build a healthier, more resilient watershed.

🦀 🏃‍♂️The Horseshoe Crab Hustle is more than just a race!

Yes, there is a 10K and a 1.5-mile walk, but this event is about so much more than crossing the finish line!

It's about giving back to the Bays and supporting the work that keeps our watershed healthy. 🌿

It's about getting outside, connecting with your community, and spending a Sunday morning on the beautiful Fresh Pond trails. ☀️

🍻 It's about celebrating with your fellow hustlers and enjoying a cold glass of Bethany Brewing b**r after crossing the finish line.

Run it. Walk it. Cheer someone on. Grab a b**r. Learn something new. Support the Bays. However you hustle, we'll see you there!

💫 Volunteer Spotlight: Chris Moore 💫

For nearly 10 years, Chris has been volunteering with the Delaware Center for the Inland Bays, sharing her lifelong love of nature with the community.

After moving to Sussex County with her husband, Chris found her way to the Center through the Center’s very own Bob Collins. Growing up, nature was always a family affair. Her mother encouraged Chris and her siblings to collect and identify butterflies, beetles, and leaves, sparking a passion that has stayed with her throughout her life.

Today, Chris spends her time volunteering at the Preserve, helping with trail maintenance, picking up trash, removing invasive plants, and supporting bird-related projects. She especially enjoys helping visitors discover the different habitats found throughout the Preserve and learning about the wildlife that calls them home.

When she’s not volunteering, Chris enjoys kayaking, quilting, playing violin with her husband and friends, and spending time with her two border collies. She also volunteers with her local fire department and helps make patriotic quilts for wounded warriors.

Her advice for anyone thinking about volunteering with the Center?
“If you like being outside and getting your hands dirty, it’s a great place to be.”

We’re grateful for Chris and the many ways she helps care for James Farm, connect people with nature, and make the Inland Bays a better place.

Delaware Sea Grant, the University of Delaware, and the Maryland Coastal Bays Program Crab Pot Roundup, originally scheduled for September 22 & 23, has been rescheduled for December 15 & 16 due to weather. Volunteers are needed to help locate, retrieve, and document derelict crab pots in the Roy Creek and Assawoman Bay area!

Volunteers with boats are especially needed, but there are several ways to get involved.

🌿 A Home for Everything

From salt marshes and forests to beaches, wetlands, and underwater habitats, the Inland Bays watershed supports an incredible variety of plants and animals.

When habitats are healthy and connected, they also provide important benefits for our communities—from filtering water and reducing flooding to stabilizing shorelines and providing natural spaces for people to enjoy.

🌱 Protecting and restoring habitat is an important part of building a more resilient Inland Bays watershed.

🌎 Want to learn more? Visit our Community Resilience Resources page to explore habitat quality and seven other concerns identified by watershed residents. Find information, resources, and ideas for helping protect the places that make the Inland Bays watershed special.

🌷 This past spring, the Bishop’s Landing community began transforming an underutilized area around one of its stormwater ponds into a vibrant native plant buffer. Now, months later, the landscape is taking root—showing what time, patience, and a shared vision can do. 🌟

The 450-foot pond buffer, installed by Tributaries, helps reduce erosion and sediment, filter pollutants carried by stormwater runoff, and provide valuable habitat for wildlife. It’s a great example of what can happen when communities and partners work together to turn shared open spaces into something living and meaningful.

This project was funded by the Bays to Backyards program through a combination of Energize Delaware and Sustainable Communities Grant funding, along with a private donation from Storyhill Farm.
