Washoe County Regional Animal Services (WCRAS) is a regional operation providing services to the cities of Reno, Sparks and unincorporated Washoe County residents. WCRAS focuses on animal health and welfare through sheltering, lost/found reunification, field services, regulation enforcement, and proactive outreach programs that support responsible pet guardianship and pet retention. WCRAS impounds an average 9,900 animals annually either brought in by citizens or picked up by field staff. Approximately 75% of the animals that come through the shelter are lost animals. The remaining 25% are bite quarantines, cruelty case animals, deceased animals, etc. WCRAS' regional facility includes 110 dog kennels, 76 cat condos, a six-stall barn for livestock and a four stall coop for fowl. Our facility routinely houses other animals such as reptiles, birds and rabbits and livestock. WCRAS works very diligently to reunite lost pets with their families. For calendar year 2023, we returned a whopping 38% (stray cat and dog) of lost animals to their families! 61% of stray dogs brought into the shelter were returned home! And 7% of the stray cats that were brought into our shelter were returned. Our philosophy is that every animal has a home and we want to help find it, whether it is a lost animal that needs help being reunited with its family or if it has been abandoned and in need of a new place to call home. Our FREE microchip program and diligent efforts by WCRAS staff contribute to our successful reunification of nearly 40% of lost animals. Check our website (WashoeAnimals.com) to see if they are here with us, photos of pets at the shelter are updated every 30 minutes. Don't forget to fill out a lost report so we can automatically notify you if a pet matching your description comes into the shelter. Found a pet? WCRAS is the only lost/found shelter in Washoe County so if you lost or found an animal, you found the right place! Complete a found report (Washoeanimals.com) first! Someone may be looking for their lost pet and there may already be a lost animal report on our website. Bring them into our offices or call dispatch to have an officer pick them up. WCRAS offers low-cost vaccination clinics on the first Wednesday of each month and in partnership with SPCA of Northern Nevada we provide free pet food distribution to seniors on the third Tuesday. 🐾💙Tune In Tuesday: A huge thank you to the amazing team from the Walmart Distribution Center in Sparks! 💙🐾
We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the amazing team from Walmart Distribution Center for volunteering their time and energy to support Animal Services!
This hardworking group volunteered their time last Friday helping rebag pet food into smaller, easy-to-carry bags for seniors, individuals experiencing homelessness, and to help stock Res-Que's Pet Karma Boxes throughout Washoe County. Your efforts make a big difference for pets and people in our community. Thank you!
If your business, organization, or group would like to volunteer with us, we’d love to have you! Please reach out at [email protected] to learn more.

🐾🌳 Found Friday: A Purr-fect Rescue and Reunion! 🌳🐾
Recently, Officer Sousa teamed up with the Sparks Fire Department to help rescue a cat that had been stranded in a tree for two days.
After being safely brought down, Animal Services was able to identify and contact the owner, leading to a happy reunion. ❤️
While this cat wasn't microchipped, this rescue is a great reminder of why microchips are so important. Unexpected situations can happen at any time, and a microchip with current contact information can help lost pets get home faster.
📍 Did you know? Animal Services provides FREE microchips to all Washoe County pets during our regular business hours:
No appointment is needed, just stop by and give your pet a permanent form of identification.
A big thank you to Officer Sousa and the Sparks Fire Department for their teamwork and dedication in helping this feline make it safely back home! 🐱🏡

Capacity Post: Take a look at what is happening in the shelter as of 8:06am Thursday 6/4/26.
Notable information:
1. Animal Services currently has 117 animals in our care at the shelter (17 more animal than last week).
2. We've had 131 cats and dogs come into our facility in the last week (12 more than last week).
3. In the last week we were able to reunite 40 dogs (7 more than last week) and 5 cats (1 less than last week) with their families, and we have transferred 63 unclaimed cats and dogs to rescue partners for adoption (9 more than last week).
4. This week 7 dogs and 1 cat were humanely euthanized for a variety of reasons, 6 dogs for behavior issues specifically related to a bite, human/animal aggression, or other behavior, 1 dog due to being declared dangerous, and 1 cat for medical issues that compromised their quality of life. These decisions, while difficult, were made with the animals' best interests and the safety of our community in mind.
