Billionaires including tech investor Peter Thiel and Google co-founder Larry Page are reportedly considering leaving California ahead of a proposed one-time 5% wealth tax, according to a new report.

Thiel, worth an estimated $27.5 billion, is said to be exploring plans to open an out-of-state office and spend more time outside California, while Page, whose net worth is estimated at $258 billion, has reportedly taken early steps toward relocating, with LLCs tied to him recently filing incorporation documents in Florida.

This year has been tough for both buyers and sellers. As affordability strains buyers, many sellers are pulling listings after prices fall short of expectations.

Delistings jumped nearly 38% in October from a year earlier and are up about 45% year to date, according to Realtor.com®. Since June, roughly 6% of listings have been removed each month, making 2025 the highest delisting rate since tracking began in 2022.

"The delisting trend is a perfect personification of the stagnant and frustration-filled housing market," says Realtor.com senior economist Jake Krimmel. "With buyers and sellers far apart, the sellers’ solution is to pull that trump card and delist, rather than cut prices."

CNBC reports that US home prices have turned negative year over year for the first time in more than two years. Affordability has collapsed under high mortgage rates, inventory is rising in many markets, and sellers are cutting prices as demand cools. The shift marks the first broad softening in the housing market since the pandemic boom.
