On the latest episode of “On the Agenda,” we sit down with the Reno Fire Department's Chief Dave Cochran to discuss a recent Reno City Council investment in firefighter Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and why that equipment matters both on emergency scenes and long-term firefighter safety.

The conversation takes a closer look at the gear firefighters rely on every day, what it protects them from, and why regular replacement is critical to keeping crews safe and effective in the field. Chief Cochran also discusses the Reno Fire Department’s new Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) vehicle at Reno-Tahoe International Airport and how updated equipment and technology help strengthen emergency response capabilities for the region.

The episode also includes highlights from the June 3 Reno City Council meeting, including the RTC 4th Street Station expansion, updates to indoor live entertainment regulations in the entertainment core, and a proposed housing development on West Plumb Lane. Plus, a preview of what residents can expect at the next Council meeting.

A Red Flag Warning has been issued for the Reno-Carson-Minden area from 11am -11pm Saturday due to expected high winds and dangerous fire conditions. These conditions can cause fires to spread quickly and unpredictably.

The Reno Fire Department is closely monitoring weather conditions and will adjust staffing and resources as needed to help keep our community safe.

You can help reduce fire risk by taking a few simple precautions:

• Secure patio furniture, umbrellas, and other loose outdoor items

• Properly dispose of ashes and smoking materials

• Avoid activities that could create sparks, including welding

• Use caution when towing trailers and make sure chains are not dragging

• Be careful when grilling outdoors or using fire pits

A little extra caution today can help prevent a wildfire tomorrow.

Meet the Reno Fire Department’s newest employee: Lambeau 🐾

His duties include:
• Providing peer support to first responders

• Visiting stations and boosting morale

• Attending meetings

• Accepting belly rubs as payment

Lambeau is the first facility dog in northern Nevada dedicated specifically to supporting firefighters and first responders. When crews have tough days, Lambeau is there with comfort, connection, and probably a tennis ball.

When he’s off the clock, Lambeau can usually be found hanging out with his friend, retired arson dog Boston, debating important topics like who gives the best ear scratches and why peanut butter treats are superior.

Fun facts:
🐶 Named after Lambeau Field
🧀 Proud Cheeseheads fan
❤️ Professional cuddler

Welcome to the team, Lambeau!

When it comes to creating defensible space, wildfire preparedness starts at home, and that includes fire stations, too!

Fire Station 14 in Somersett recently completed brush removal and tree trimming around the station to help reduce wildfire risk and improve defensible space. The work took place alongside broader wildfire mitigation efforts happening throughout the community, including vegetation management projects supported by the Somersett Homeowners Association and Green waste disposal happening this weekend at Horseman's Park! (more info to come)

Creating defensible space doesn't have to be complicated. A few simple steps can make a big difference:

- Remove dead vegetation, leaves, and pine needles around your home in a 5ft radius
- Trim tree branches away from roofs and chimneys
- Keep grass mowed and well-maintained
- Space shrubs and other vegetation to reduce fire spread
- Move combustible materials, such as firewood, away from structures

Wildfire preparedness is a shared responsibility, and every property that becomes more resilient helps strengthen the entire community!

Today was the ceremonial push-in for a new Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting vehicle (ARFF) at Station 15 at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport!

Replacing a 20-year-old apparatus, the new ARFF brings enhanced aircraft emergency response capabilities, PFAS-free firefighting foam technology, and the tools firefighters need to help keep passengers, airport personnel, and our region safe.

This vehicle was made possible through a $911,140 Federal Aviation Administration grant secured by Senators Catherine Cortez Masto and Jacky Rosen, Congressman Mark Amodei, and nearly $214,000 in funding from the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority.

*Warning: The following footage is from a planned emergency response drill conducted for training and educational purposes. No one was actually in danger.*

The Reno Fire Department recently joined regional partners during a full-scale emergency exercise at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport designed to test how agencies respond during a major incident.

These drills allow first responders to train for large emergencies by practicing communication, coordination, rescues, hazardous materials response, and medical response in real-time conditions.

Training like this helps ensure agencies across the region are prepared to respond together quickly, safely, and effectively when every second matters.
