Apply the science of nutrition in real time!
Students step into the lab to explore how nutrition principles translate into everyday food choices and overall health, connecting lecture concepts to real-world applications through hands-on activities. They conducted an experiment that revealed how “invisible" fats in fast foods like hamburgers and chicken nuggets can be made visible, bringing food composition and nutrient analysis to life.
Through this experience, students:
• Analyze the nutritional components of foods
• Evaluate nutrient needs and dietary patterns
• Apply nutrition principles to real-life meal planning
• Build practical skills for making informed food choices
This engaging activity not only reinforced key scientific concepts but also challenged students to think more critically about what’s in their food.
This is part of Human Nutrition (NUTR 121), a foundational course taught by Director of the Didactic Program in Dietetics, Jolyn Wirshing, with lab sections led by graduate students — giving students a well-rounded understanding of the role of nutrition in health and wellness.
