The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office is offering a free Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Academy beginning Thursday, October 15, 2026.

Recent wildfires, including the Bug and Hawk fires, highlighted the important role trained CERT volunteers play in supporting our community and public safety personnel during large-scale emergencies.

The CERT Academy gives residents hands-on training in disaster preparedness, emergency medical techniques, fire safety, light search and rescue, disaster psychology and more. No previous experience or special skills are required.

The six-session academy will be held October 15, 16, 17, 22, 23 and 24 at the Regional Public Safety Training Center, 5190 Spectrum Boulevard.

Preparing to help starts before an emergency happens. Completing the CERT Academy provides the training needed to become eligible to serve as a Citizen Corps volunteer when our community needs additional support.

Yesterday afternoon, Washoe County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a two-vehicle crash on East Golden Valley Road, just past Opal Station Drive.

While deputies were responding, a reporting party advised that one of the involved drivers had left the scene. The reporting party followed the vehicle and provided directional updates to dispatch, helping deputies quickly locate the driver.

Deputies identified the driver as 64-year-old Philip Wedin. Following the investigation, Wedin was arrested and booked into the Washoe County Detention Facility for Driving Under the Influence, First Offense, and Duty to Stop at the Scene of an Accident.

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office will continue DUI enforcement efforts aimed at preventing impaired driving, reducing serious crashes, and keeping our roadways safe.

Another year of teamwork, skill, and some incredible K9s in action!

Today, members of our Washoe County Sheriff’s Office K9 Unit joined law enforcement K9 teams from across the region for the 5th Annual Carson City Sheriff’s Office K9 Unit Challenge.

The annual competition puts K9 teams through a series of events designed to showcase the skills they train for throughout the year, while giving the community an opportunity to see firsthand the partnership, discipline, and trust between handlers and their K9 partners.

We are proud of all of our WCSO teams who represented our agency throughout today’s competition, with Deputy Locke and K9 Otto taking second place in the Patrol scenario.

“The skills demonstrated during this competition are the same skills our K9 teams rely on every day while assisting with narcotics investigations, locating suspects, conducting searches, and supporting our deputies in the field,” said Sheriff Darin Balaam. “I am incredibly proud of our handlers and their K9 partners for the work they put into their training and the way they continue to represent WCSO and serve our community.”

Thank you to the Carson City Sheriff's Office for once again bringing law enforcement agencies and our communities together for a great event, and congratulations to all of the K9 teams who competed!

“While first responders are actively working to suppress the Bull Fire, I want to remind everyone to please stay away and give them the space they need to work safely,” said Sheriff Darin Balaam. “We know our community wants to stay informed and look out for one another, and we appreciate everyone’s cooperation. Unnecessary traffic can delay emergency response and interfere with suppression efforts, so please help us by keeping roads clear and avoiding the incident area.”
