Our Community Needs Wes Duncan as District Attorney

Local law enforcement associations respect the opinions of three long-retired chiefs and sheriffs who have recently spoken on this race. They have served this community, and their voices matter. However, it is equally important for the public to hear from those of us actively doing the job today. Every day, we are on the streets responding to calls, making arrests, and seeing firsthand how policies impact public safety. From that perspective, our collective memberships stand united in support of Wes Duncan for District Attorney.

This position does not come lightly. Many of us have worked alongside Chris Hicks and once considered him a partner in public safety. But after years of raising concerns and seeing little change, we feel a responsibility to speak clearly. One of our primary concerns is the need for accountability and presence within the District Attorney’s Office. Public safety requires coordination and communication, and that starts with having staff fully present and engaged in the office.

We are also increasingly frustrated with how bail decisions are handled. Too often, repeat and violent offenders are released back into the community. While we understand the legal framework, including the Valdez-Jimenez decision, it should not be used as a blanket justification for outcomes that put public safety at risk. Our community deserves a system that prioritizes keeping dangerous individuals off the streets.

Additionally, there has been a shift in expectations placed on police officers that undermines the justice process. Requiring officers to build cases to a “beyond a reasonable doubt” standard at the report stage is not how the system is designed to function. Our role is to establish probable cause, and it is the responsibility of the District Attorney’s Office to prosecute those cases. Under the current approach, we are seeing serious felony cases declined, leaving victims without justice.

We are also concerned about leadership and judgment within the office. Recent attention to nepotism and a formal ethics complaint related to the employment of a spouse raises serious questions about maintaining the public’s trust. The District Attorney’s Office is a public trust, not a family business. It must operate with transparency, fairness, and accountability at all times, and anything that undermines that trust affects the entire system.

Washoe County is growing rapidly, and the challenges we face are becoming more complex. Crime, homelessness, and public safety demands require strong leadership and a clear commitment to action. For those reasons, our combined membership is united in supporting Wes Duncan. This is not about politics—it is about ensuring our community has a District Attorney who will stand with law enforcement, uphold accountability, and protect the public.
From those of us actively serving today, the message is clear: it is time for a change.

🇺🇸 Introducing Tim Ross - Ross for Reno 🇺🇸
Reno isn't just where Tim Ross lives — it's home. He grew up here, attended local schools, graduated from Reno High School and the University of Nevada, Reno, and built his life serving this community he loves.
After college, Tim worked as a Substitute Teacher before becoming a local business owner, gaining firsthand experience building and sustaining a business in Reno. He later dedicated his career to public safety, retiring as a Sergeant with the Washoe County Sheriff's Office after years of protecting and serving our community.
Tim is a proven leader. He served eleven years on the Executive Board of the Washoe County Sheriff Deputies Association, much of that time as President, and later led the Supervisory Deputies Association. He also served 7.5 years on Nevada's PERS Board, including four years as Chair, helping safeguard one of our state's most important public institutions.
A skilled negotiator and problem solver, Tim has led labor negotiations since 2009. He believes leadership means listening, finding common ground, and doing the hard work necessary to reach real solutions.
Tim is running for Mayor because he loves Reno. He believes it's time to return to Reno's core mission: keep Reno safe, keep it clean, and make it financially sound.
That means cutting financial fat, focusing on the basics, coordinating services efficiently, and putting results ahead of division.
Reno deserves steady leadership, real-world experience, and someone who puts the community first. Tim Ross is ready to serve - and ready to get things done.

It is time for a change.

District Attorney Chris Hicks has completely lost the trust of law enforcement, a cornerstone of any District Attorney’s role. Reno Police Protective Association President Tom Lopey didn’t mince words when he said officers are “deeply concerned” about Hicks’ lack of leadership and charging policies that “undermine public safety and community trust.” John Torres, president of the Reno Police Supervisory/Administrative Employees Association, went further, saying Hicks’ charging policies have “endangered the community” by letting dangerous criminals walk or plea out, warning that “these poorly negotiated cases have led to more violent crime including murder.” The Washoe County Sheriff’s Deputies Association declared trust between deputies and Hicks’ office is “completely lost.”

Hicks is not fighting for justice—he’s fighting for his win rate. Torres exposed Hicks’ approach, stating that Hicks avoids cases he isn’t “100% sure he can win.” Even Nevada Police Union leadership pointed out that DUIs are not being prosecuted seriously under Hicks. This isn’t a policy disagreement—it’s a fundamental failure of leadership. Law enforcement is tired of seeing justice sidelined for statistics.

What’s truly shocking is that Hicks, a Republican incumbent, lost the endorsement of law enforcement—something virtually unheard of. The Washoe County Sheriff’s Deputies and multiple police associations have made it clear: Hicks is failing. A District Attorney who loses the faith of those on the front lines can’t deliver justice. Under Hicks, Washoe County is paying the price.

Governor Joe Lombardo was born into a military family and moved to Las Vegas when his father was stationed at Nellis Air Force Base. He attended Rancho High School and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. After graduating, he served in the United States Army and in the Nevada National Guard.

Following his military service, Governor Lombardo joined the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD), where he quickly rose through the ranks and served at nearly every level, from detective to assistant sheriff. For 26 years on the force, Governor Lombardo fought crime, protected millions of visitors, and kept Nevada families safe. He was then elected to serve as Sheriff of Clark County in 2014 and re-elected in 2018. As Sheriff of Nevada’s largest county, he oversaw a $1.3 billion budget, managed 6,000 employees, tackled complex public-safety challenges, and led LVMPD’s efforts to protect millions of residents and visitors each day.

As Nevada’s 31st Governor, Joe has a record of delivering results: signing the Nevada Housing Access and Attainability Act, reforming government to be more efficient, cutting and streamlining more than 900 burdensome regulations, creating over 10,000 new jobs, delivering the single largest education investment in state history - $2 billion in new funding, reaffirming Nevada is not a sanctuary state, and more. His administration has made real progress, but there is still unfinished business.

His leadership is guided by the Nevada Way, a concept that as Nevadans, if we believe in ourselves and trust one another to overcome adversity, we shall never fail. With steady leadership and a clear vision, Joe is ready to keep fighting for Nevada’s future and expanding opportunity so families, workers, and communities can thrive.

The LVPPA proudly endorses Governor Joe Lombardo for re-election.
