⚡💡 THANK YOU TO OUR ELECTRIC UTILITY DEPARTMENT! 💡⚡

Our dedicated linemen, metermen, and administrative staff work hard every day to keep the lights on for Rensselaer’s homes and businesses. Rain or shine, hot or cold, day or night — when Mother Nature throws something our way, this team is there to serve our community. ⚡

Many times, their work happens behind the scenes and during long hours, but their dedication makes a difference every single day.

In honor of Municipal Public Power Week October 4-10, 2026, the City of Rensselaer would like to recognize and thank the hardworking men and women of our Electric Utility Department! ❤️

⚡ We appreciate all you do to keep Rensselaer powered! ❤️

🏡 It Takes a Community… and a Lot of Hard Work!

From keeping our water flowing and our streets in good shape to caring for our parks, utilities, trash and recycling, and being there when our community needs us — there’s a lot that goes into keeping Rensselaer running smoothly.

We’re proud of the people who show up every day to serve our community and help make Rensselaer a great place to call home! 🏡❤️

The Indiana Association of Municipalities (AIM) created a great video called “The Ordinary & The Extraordinary” that highlights the important work happening in communities across Indiana.

🎥 Take a minute to watch — and see a little of what goes on behind the scenes in the communities we call home.

A big thank you to all of our City employees who work hard every day to take care of Rensselaer! 💙

🚶‍♀️🌳 Trail Agreement on Tonight’s City Council Agenda! 🌳🚶‍♂️

A trail agreement is on the agenda for tonight’s City Council meeting.

We're proposing to give your neighborhood direct pedestrian access to one of the community's recreational amenities.”

Research from Indiana University suggests that residential real estate values increase with proximity to trails and parks. The research also suggests that proximity to these amenities can make homes more desirable to buyers:

We obviously can't ignore the concerns of those who have met with the Mayor and attended our meeting. What we can do is take those concerns seriously and look at what has actually happened in other communities.

I found this Indiana University Indianapolis study particularly interesting:
https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3750272

Researchers examined Indianapolis trail openings and violent and property crimes both before and after those trails opened. Depending on the statistical method used, the researchers found either reductions in crime or no statistically significant change. Most importantly for the concern being raised here, they did not find that opening the trails resulted in increased crime.

A trail that is well used by the community has people on it regularly.

Opponents of proposed urban greenway trails frequently argue that the development of the trails will lead to increases in crime. Data on the opening of trail se

🍻🌕 Oktoberfest & a Beautiful Full Moon! 🌕🍻

Mayor Phillips had a great time enjoying Oktoberfest in Rensselaer this weekend! It was a wonderful evening filled with good food, great music, friendly faces, and plenty of community spirit. 🇩🇪❤️

And to top it all off, we were treated to a beautiful full moon shining over our hometown! 🌕✨

There’s just something special about evenings like this in Rensselaer — neighbors coming together, enjoying each other’s company, and making great memories.

Thank you to everyone who helped make Oktoberfest such a fun community celebration! 🍻🎶🇺🇸
