The Equity Commission is made up of nine volunteers who dedicate their time to help make sure that city programs, policies, and services work for everyone.

As an advisory group, members don’t make city decisions but bring perspective grounded in their own experiences and in training on Renton's Equity Lens.‌

Here’s how they help:
🔍 Review: When city staff or officials ask, commissioners look closely at a city practice, policy or procedure.
⚖️ Assess: They consider whether it could create or support inequity, which communities might be affected, and how.
💡 Recommend: They suggest specific actions to address any inequities they find.

📋 Report: Each year, they share a summary of their work and recommendations with the City Council.

Remember, commissioners aren’t city employees, consultants, or councilmembers! They’re neighbors and community members who volunteer their evenings to help make Renton more equitable.

Each year, Renton joins the nation in observing Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15.

During last Monday's Renton City Council meeting, Mayor Armondo Pavone designated September 15 – October 15, as National Hispanic Heritage Month in Renton. Equity Commissioner Camila Lagow accepted the proclamation.

Lagow reflected on immigrating to the United States, the emotions, and challenges faced with establishing a new life away from Mexico. “I am proud to call myself Mexican American, it means my heart is lucky enough to hold two great loves, the land that gave me my roots and the community where I build my life. This is home now, but my roots are home too, one does not erase the other.”
