Renton High School students recently visited King County, Washington - Government Information Technology (KCIT) in Seattle to explore careers and prepare for upcoming paid internship opportunities.

Students toured KCIT facilities, met with professionals in a range of technology , and participated in hands-on activities designed to introduce them to the work performed by IT professionals, including support, , and hardware repair, gaining firsthand insight into the skills, responsibilities, and career pathways available in the information technology field.

Students connected their classroom learning with real-world applications while learning about the types of projects and responsibilities they may encounter as paid interns. By engaging directly with industry professionals, students gained a better understanding of the diverse career opportunities available in technology and the skills needed to pursue them.

The internship program is made possible through a partnership between King County IT, the Washington Alliance for Better Schools (WABS), and Renton School District’s Career and Technical Education ( ) program. Through this collaboration, students can explore career pathways, build practical skills, and gain valuable workplace experience as they prepare for future education and employment opportunities.

Congratulations to staff who were recognized with Renton School District's Superintendent's Award for October 2026. Dr. Pattenaude presents the awards throughout the year to recognize staff who exemplify the district’s core values of Service, Excellence, and Equity.

Service: Curtis Riggins, Safety Officer, Lindbergh High School. Curtis takes time to build positive relationships as a trusted, consistent presence. He also supports youth theater production, helping young people build confidence, creativity, and a sense of belonging. Curtis is instrumental in the annual tours of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), providing opportunities for students to experience college campuses, explore their future possibilities, and see educational pathways.

Excellence: Megan Farmer, CTE Information Specialist. Megan provides outstanding service to our students, families, and staff, handling all class approval compliance items with the state education office, OSPI - keeping more than 100 of our classes approved and funded. She redesigns and manages the department’s public and staff facing websites to provide updated, factual information about all programs, and manages the yearly update of the CTE Career Guide.

Equity: John Hoag, RLC Teacher, McKnight Middle School. John supports students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in general education. He ensures access for students with disabilities, including partnering with families to foster safety and belonging, collaborating with community partners, and ensures plans are implemented with fidelity. John consistently maintains high standards and rigor for students to close learning gaps and helps them meet their goals.

Students in middle school 8th grade science classes are learning about mass, speed, and kinetic energy. Students are running lab experiments to investigate how changing mass and speed of objects impacts the kinetic energy in systems and then collecting empirical data to plot on graphs.

Like students at Dimmitt Middle School (pictured) who are investigating why things like cell phones sometimes break in a collision.

In science classes, students learn to behave like scientists and engineers by observing, questioning, analyzing, testing, and evaluating evidence rather than just memorizing facts. Middle school science is a vital turning point that builds foundational problem-solving skills, keeps students engaged in STEM, and prepares them for advanced high school classes.

Student health is an important part of education. Helping to keep students healthy means there’s one less barrier to coming to school every day, ready to learn. Some of the preventative care and screenings we do involve routine health checks including vision, hearing, and more.

Through this month, our students are receiving their annual eye and hearing exams using instrument-based screeners or standardized distance and near-vision charts and pure-tone audiometers to examine hearing.

Lindbergh High students in Marlys Miller’s Culinary Arts Gourmet class are exploring Native American cuisine and food sovereignty. Recently made 3-Sisters soup learning the practice of growing corn, beans, and squash together to optimize the harvest.

Career and Technical Education (CTE) classes, like Culinary Arts, provide our students with hands-on learning to prepare them for important life lessons and offer them opportunities to try their hand at skills they might turn into a profession.

Renton High School students in the healthcare professionals program (HOSA) recently give back to their community through volunteer service with Nick of Time Foundation, supporting free heart screenings for more than 200 district students. Students worked together to assist with service activities in helping other students learn CPR.

Students from Renton High's Culinary Arts program also assisted to provide food for the many health care professionals supporting the event.

As future healthcare professionals and community leaders, HOSA students understand that caring for others extends beyond the classroom to include opportunities to practice leadership, develop professional skills, and strengthen their connection to the community.
