Last week we talked about romance scams which target older victims. Today we want to talk about younger victims of similar, sextortion scams.
In contrast with the long-term romance cons, these sextortion scams can unfold in just hours or days. A scammer flirts with a victim, convinces them to share intimate images, and then threatens to send those images to friends and family unless the victim pays.
We've seen cases where young people have stolen or borrowed money from their parents in an attempt to pay off these scammers. Unfortunately, paying rarely makes the problem go away. Scammers often demand more money, even after receiving payment.
Talk with your kids about the risks of sharing intimate images online. Once an image is sent, you lose control over where it goes or who sees it. If someone threatens them, make sure they know they can come to you for help without fear of being judged.
