Dear Fire Chiefs and Departments,

The Ohio Fire Chiefs Association, the Ohio Professional Fire Fighters, and the Ohio State Firefighters Association are once again jointly sponsoring a statewide First Responder Mental Health Survey. This survey will help identify the stressors, needs, and support gaps affecting first responders across Ohio—and guide future resources that reflect the realities of the job.

Across the state, first responders currently rely on a range of mental health and wellness treatments, including:

Trauma‑informed counseling and therapy, often delivered by clinicians trained specifically in first responder culture and stressors.

Peer support programs and monthly statewide wellness calls that connect fire, EMS, law enforcement, dispatch, and other responders for training, updates, and shared learning.

Evidence‑based therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), used to address PTSD, anxiety, depression, and cumulative trauma.

Holistic wellness resources, including stress‑management tools, emotional wellbeing support, physical wellness guidance, and spiritual and social wellness programs.

Specialized rehabilitation and recovery programs for responders experiencing substance‑use challenges, including dual‑diagnosis treatment, individual and group therapy, and long-term recovery planning.

Your participation in the survey will help strengthen and expand these supports—ensuring Ohio’s Emergency Responders have the tools needed to stay healthy, resilient, and mission-ready.

Available Oct. 1 - Nov. 1

Charging something big like an e-bike, scooter, or power tool with a lithium-ion battery? Do it outside. Use a flat, dry area away from direct sunlight, anything wet, kids, or tripping hazards. And make sure your bike or device is secure—so it doesn’t fall while charging.

During this , Ohio State Fire Marshal Fire Safety Educator Kyle Wobler participated in an American Red Cross Sound the Alarm Campaign Smoke Alarm Blitz in the City of Defiance that helped make 71 residents safer by providing and installing 51 smoke alarms in 25 homes.

The community effort brought together the Defiance Fire and Rescue Division, Defiance City Mayor – Mike McCann, American Red Cross, Northwest Ohio Community Action Coalition, Defiance Zion Club, and the Ohio Division of State Fire Marshal Fire Prevention Bureau. Firefighters and community partners worked directly with residents to identify homes in need of working smoke alarms and ensure the alarms were properly installed.

The successful blitz highlights the importance of working smoke alarms in every home and demonstrates the impact that can be made when agencies, community organizations and residents work together to improve fire safety.
