For Immediate Release:

Today at 03:14 hours, the Rhinebeck Fire Department was dispatched to a reported motor vehicle accident on Route 9G in the area of Miller Road. Upon arrival, emergency personnel encountered a single-vehicle accident involving a utility pole, with one seriously injured patient heavily entrapped in the vehicle.

A medevac helicopter was requested while Rhinebeck Fire and EMS personnel worked together to extricate the patient and prepare for transport. The patient was transported to Northern Dutchess Hospital with advanced life support care provided by Dutchess County EMS.

LifeNet of New York landed at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds. Rhinebeck Ambulance 59-71 assisted with the transfer of the flight crew and patient between Northern Dutchess Hospital and the landing zone. The patient was subsequently transferred to LifeNet and flown to a higher level of care.

Route 9G remains closed at this time due to damage to a utility pole. The accident remains under investigation by the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office. Rhinebeck Fire Department units cleared the incident at approximately 06:30 hours.

The Rhinebeck Fire Department extends its appreciation to the following agencies for their assistance: Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police, Dutchess County EMS/Empress, LifeNet of New York, and Central Hudson. Operational support was provided by the Dutchess County Department of Emergency Response.

On September 11, 2001, our nation witnessed unimaginable tragedy—and extraordinary courage.

Twenty-five years later, we remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11, 2001, and honor the first responders who answered the call without hesitation.

We remember the 343 members of the FDNY who made the ultimate sacrifice that day, along with the law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, and other first responders who lost their lives. In the face of unimaginable danger, they answered the call with courage, selflessness, and an unwavering commitment to protect others.

We also remember the thousands of firefighters, police officers, EMTs, paramedics, and other responders who worked at Ground Zero in the days and months that followed, and those who have since lost their lives to World Trade Center-related illnesses. The toll of September 11 did not end that day.

Today, the members of the Rhinebeck Fire Department honor their courage, their service, and their sacrifice.

25 years later, we will never forget 🇺🇸

Joint Effort and Swift Action Highlight Emergency Response at Dutchess County Fair

On Friday afternoon, August 28, emergency personnel responded to a medical emergency involving an unresponsive individual inside Barn 30 at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds.

Rhinebeck Fire Department Firefighter/EMT Erik Stroka and Skylar Jackson, an Albany Med Registered Nurse and former EMT, were in Barn 30 when the emergency occurred and immediately joined Dutchess County Fair EMS personnel in providing care to the patient. Nearby Rhinebeck Fire Department personnel also responded to the emergency, including Firefighter/EMT Thomas Beichert, who became directly involved in the resuscitation efforts. Stroka and Beichert also serve as Firefighter/EMTs with the City of Poughkeepsie and City of Kingston Fire Departments, respectively.

Working together, responders provided continuous resuscitative care, including CPR and use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Additional Rhinebeck Fire Department personnel assisted with the overall emergency response, and upon the arrival of Empress Emergency Medical Services, Paramedics Abby Buring and Nicole Ledoux joined the ongoing resuscitation and provided advanced life support care. Buring is also a member of the Rhinebeck Fire Department. Following continued CPR and multiple defibrillations, return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) was achieved.

The patient was transported by Empress ambulance to Northern Dutchess Hospital, with Rhinebeck Fire Department EMS personnel accompanying the unit and assisting with continued patient care en route.

Following arrival at Northern Dutchess Hospital, arrangements were made to transfer the patient to a higher level of care at Vassar Brothers Medical Center via LifeNet helicopter. Because the standard fairgrounds landing area was being utilized for event parking, Rhinebeck Fire Department personnel established and staffed an alternate air-medical landing zone at nearby Rhinebeck High School to facilitate the transfer.

This incident demonstrates the critical importance of immediate CPR, early defibrillation, and coordinated emergency medical care. From the initial resuscitation through ground transport and subsequent air-medical transfer, numerous individuals and agencies worked together toward the common goal of providing the patient with the highest level of care possible.

The Rhinebeck Fire Department commends Dutchess County Fair EMS, Empress Emergency Medical Services, New York State Police, and Dutchess County Fair Security and Administration for their teamwork and professionalism throughout this incident.

We are proud of our members who stepped forward to assist and grateful to everyone involved for the cooperation and teamwork demonstrated throughout the response.

Throwback Thursday

A Rhinebeck EMS crew photographed at St. Francis Hospital (now MidHudson Regional) sometime in the 1990s.

Many things have changed over the years—our ambulances, equipment, and EMS practices—but the commitment of our volunteers to serving the community remains the same.

Yesterday was a busy day for Rhinebeck FD.

At 5:19 AM, Ladder 59-46 was requested mutual aid to stand by for the Fairview Fire District in their station while their crews operated at a large multi-agency structure fire at the Hudson River State Hospital property. Rhinebeck personnel remained on standby for approximately 13 hours before returning to the district.

At 12:16 PM, we were requested by the New York State Police to assist with a horse that had become entangled inside a trailer. Engine 59-22 responded after clearing a fire alarm, along with Rescue 59-55 and Ambulance 59-71.

On arrival, crews found that the horse had jumped over the chest bar and become caught in the trailer’s divider system and a tack trunk. Working in coordination with veterinarians from Rhinebeck Equine and members of New York State Police, the horse was sedated and carefully freed.

Firefighters used specialized rescue equipment to carefully lift the horse and safely remove part of the trailer divider system. The horse was then guided onto a rescue glide and removed from the trailer, where he remained under close monitoring by the veterinary team.

The incident occurred near Buttonwood Farm, whose staff provided important assistance throughout the operation, including supplying hay bales used to support the horse during the rescue. The horse is spending the night at Buttonwood Farm and is expected to make a full recovery.

Animal rescues involving large animals can be challenging and require careful coordination to ensure the safety of both responders and the animal involved.

This was a unique incident and a strong example of coordinated work between firefighters, EMS, law enforcement, veterinarians, the horse’s caretakers, and the local community.

In addition to these calls, the Rhinebeck EMS team also handled several medical calls throughout the district during the day.
