Catching up with Class 46 🚒

This week, Class 46 completed Week 16 of their Fire Academy. Since their last check-in on Week 11, they have completed learning vent, search and rescue, Hazmat, fire suppression, and finished extraction this week.

Week 20 is just around the corner, which means so is graduation! Stay tuned for more updates!

Meet Cinderella, a cream Alaskan Husky and Labrador Retriever. She’s our newest friend from the animal shelter looking for her fur-ever home 🐶

She is 5 years old and the calmest, sweetest dog! We loved spending the day with her!

🚨 An update on Raider: he’s been adopted! Our Deputy Fire Marshal loved him so much he decided to keep him!

On Thursday night, RFD had the privilege of hosting Session 7 of our city’s Richardson CARES program at the Fire Training Center 🚒

CARES, also known as Citizens Academy & Resource Education Series offers residents and other stakeholders an operational behind-the-scenes look at Richardson’s municipal government.

With the help of Station 1, Station 4, and Station 5 on C-Shift, as well as our Chiefs and EMS and Training Divisions, we walked participants through the history of our fire service and where we are now, CPR and how we respond on scene, a vehicle extrication, showed them our HAZMAT 5, and let them put out their own car fire!

Last month, RFD members took part in the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) row challenge, a Concept 2 Rower evaluation that consists of a 2000-meter row for time, a 500-meter row for time, or a 4-minute row for meters.

This challenge is part of our fitness initiative, adding a fun, friendly competition for members. Overall, the department had 105 members participate in rowing this year.

First, we have Firefighter/Paramedic Clifton Vannoy from Station 4, C-Shift with a 1:18 500m row.

Second, we have Firefighter/Paramedic Ty Nelson from Station 1, B-Shift with a time of 6:34 on the 2000m row, taking back his title after giving it to Vannoy last year.

Taking the title of “Fittest Crew”, goes to Station 2 C-Shift for the second year in a row!

Last week on Thursday, RFD was honored to have a member of FDNY come visit and speak to Class 46 and members of our fire department.

Joe Esposito is a veteran of Rescue 5 on Staten Island with over 40 years of service (and counting) and is known as one of the last active 9/11-era firefighters from his unit still on the job. On 9/11/01, he lost his brother, Captain Michael Esposito (Squad 1), his cousin, Firefighter Frank Esposito (Engine 235), and 11 fellow members of Rescue 5 during the September 11 attacks.

Jo Jo spent ten months working day and night on Ground Zero recovery efforts and has acted as a family liaison and support pillar for grieving families for over two decades. Jo Jo talked about life in the fire service, his firsthand experience on 9/11 and the years to follow, and answered any questions our department had.

We are partnering with our friends at Richardson Animal Shelter to help some animals find their forever home (if our own department doesn’t adopt them all first) 🐶

Each week, we will be taking a fur friend and spending the day with FD together to share with all of you!

Meet Raider 🐶 He is a Catahoula Leopard Mix. Raider is not even a year old yet and is already such a good boy! He’s shy at first, but once he warms up, he just wants to play and snuggle. We loved spending the day with him!

A closer look at ropes week with Class 46 🪢

Before their obstacle course during ropes week, Class 46 got comfortable with their rope and learned how to rappel!

Last week, two recently promoted Driver/Engineers and two of our Firefighter/Paramedics who are on the promotional list attended a week-long Green Tag Training at our Training Center 🚒

During this week, they learned from various instructors in a classroom setting as well as at our training tower to help prepare them for life on shift as a driver and for moments when they may need to step up to Captain.
