After a fire at a military battery storage facility in South Korea, roughly 210,000 unexploded lithium batteries were at risk of secondary thermal runaway. Firefighters were barred from entering for nearly two weeks and standard rescue robots and tracked vehicles were too heavy for the site.

Researchers at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology deployed a vine-inspired inflatable robot that extends through tight spaces using compressed air and it completed a full visual reconnaissance of the interior without disturbing a single battery.

The workforce conversation in the fire sprinkler industry usually sounds the same: more opportunity, more leadership roles, more chances to advance.

Beckie Bortner of North American Fire Protection Company challenges that framing in the July/August issue of 𝘚𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘬𝘭𝘦𝘳 𝘈𝘨𝘦. Her argument: the issue was never whether people wanted opportunity. The issue was whether they understood what came with it.

Ownership isn't simply a title; it's caring about the outcome. It's noticing problems before they become someone else's responsibility and taking accountability when nobody is watching.

The next generation isn't asking for less accountability. They're asking for accountability to be defined.

Another one for the sprinkler save file!

On October 3rd, an oven fire broke out on the 30th floor of a 46-story high-rise in Honolulu. By the time the Honolulu Fire Department arrived about 10 minutes later, the building's fire sprinkler system had already activated and was controlling the fire.

This is what fire sprinklers quietly deliver every day. The difference between a controlled oven fire on the 30th floor and a catastrophic high-rise incident is almost always the system installed in the ceiling.

The NFPA 25 Fire Pump Workshop is October 22-23 in Dallas, and it's the last hands-on fire pump training AFSA is running in 2026.

Two days in the AFSA Training Lab with live demonstrations of no-flow and full-flow pump tests, walkthroughs on the differences between diesel and electric fire pumps, data acquisition, supply graphing, and performance interpretation worked through on real equipment.

Today is Fire Prevention Day.

Fire Prevention Week is held around October 9 in remembrance of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, a disaster that helped change the way America thought about preventing catastrophic fire loss. More than 150 years later, that work belongs to a lot of people.

🧑‍🚒 The firefighters who respond.
📚 The educators who teach prevention.
📋 The AHJs who enforce the codes.
🖥️ The designers who engineer protection.
⚙️ The fitters who install it.
🔎 The inspectors and technicians who make sure it works when needed.

Different roles all operating with one mission: protecting lives and property from fire. Today, we are proud to recognize everyone who has made that mission their profession.
