💲FEMA AFG GRANT AWARD💲

Tri-County Fire Protection District has been awarded $35,714.28 through FEMA’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program to purchase five new thermal imaging cameras.

The total project is $37,500, leaving Tri-County responsible for just $1,785.72.

The five cameras will equip our three engines, rescue engine, and ladder truck, putting a modern thermal imager in the hands of our firefighters wherever our primary structural apparatus responds. The new cameras will also meet the latest applicable NFPA standards for thermal imaging cameras, giving our crews equipment designed and tested to current fire-service performance requirements.

And these aren't just cool pieces of technology.

Inside a smoke-filled building where visibility can be nearly zero, a thermal imaging camera can help a firefighter locate a victim, find the seat of a fire, identify hidden heat behind walls and ceilings, and recognize changing conditions before they become even more dangerous. After the fire is knocked down, they're equally valuable for finding hot spots that could lead to rekindle.

For a department operating on a small budget, purchasing $37,500 worth of equipment at one time would be a major expense. Through this award, more than 95% of the project will be paid with federal grant funding.

That's what makes grants like AFG so important to a small, 100% volunteer fire department like ours. They allow us to put modern equipment in the hands of our firefighters while being responsible with the local tax dollars entrusted to us.

We're excited to retire some equipment that's been serving Tri-County for a couple of decades and put the next generation of thermal imaging technology into service.

TRI-COUNTY RESPONDS TO BACK-TO-BACK STRUCTURE FIRE AND THREE-ALARM NATURAL COVER FIRE

RICHLAND, Mo. — Tri-County Fire Protection District crews responded to two consecutive fire incidents on Saturday, September 19, 2026: a residential structure fire in Richland and a natural cover fire that escalated to a three-alarm response.

At approximately 12:11 p.m., the Pulaski County 9-1-1 Center dispatched Tri-County Fire Protection District and automatic aid partners Hazelgreen Fire Protection District and Waynesville Rural Fire Protection District to a first-alarm residential structure fire on Holland Drive.

The caller reported seeing and smelling smoke coming from a bedroom. While still on the phone with 9-1-1, the caller advised that smoke was filling the home.

Engine-Tanker 1351 arrived first and reported smoke coming from the eaves. Crews entered the home and located a fire in a rear bedroom closet containing the electrical panel.

Rescue-Engine 1381, Tanker 1361, Hazelgreen Engine 1851, and Waynesville Engine 1951 arrived and assisted with fire suppression, salvage, and overhaul operations. The fire was brought under control within 15 minutes of Engine-Tanker 1351’s arrival.

The fire was determined to be accidental and electrical in origin. The American Red Cross was contacted to assist the residents, and Richland City Utilities was contacted to disconnect power to the home. The house sustained heavy smoke damage.

Tri-County Fire Protection District responded with Engine-Tanker 1351, Tanker 1361, Rescue-Engine 1381, and four firefighters. The district thanks the following agencies and organizations for their assistance:

• Hazelgreen Fire Protection District — Engine 1851
• Waynesville Rural Fire Protection District— Engine 1951
• Pulaski County Mo Ambulance District — Medic 26
• Richland Police Department
• Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office
• Pulaski County Mo NG911
• City of Richland, Missouri Municipal Government
• American Red Cross

Immediately after clearing the structure fire, Tri-County crews were dispatched at 1:29 p.m. to a second-alarm natural cover fire on Grindstone Road to provide mutual aid to Lebanon Rural Fire Protection District.

Engine-Tanker 1351 and Brush 1371 responded. Crews provided structure protection, supplied water to brush trucks, and assisted with fire suppression. The incident subsequently escalated to a three-alarm response. Crews cleared the scene at 5:48 p.m.

Video from the Grindstone Road Fire can be found in the comments section.

TRI-COUNTY AWARDED $71,473 DOI WILDLAND FIRE GRANT

Tri-County Fire Protection District is proud to announce that we have been awarded a $71,473 grant through the U.S. Department of the Interior's Office of Wildland Fire Management for the purchase of two new slip-on wildland firefighting units.

Even better, this award is 100% federally funded with no local match required, allowing us to make a significant improvement to our wildland firefighting capabilities without placing an additional financial burden on our local taxpayers.

The grant will provide Tri-County with two purpose-built units:

A 400-gallon slip-on unit will be installed on Brush 1373, replacing the smaller, older skid unit that was purchased used and has served the department for many years.

A 200-gallon slip-on unit will be available for Squad 1382, giving us the ability to quickly convert the squad into an additional brush-fire response apparatus during periods of elevated and extreme fire danger—exactly the type of conditions our area is currently experiencing.

The flexibility provided by these two units will increase our available water supply, improve our ability to reach fires in rural and difficult-to-access areas, and allow the District to place additional wildland firefighting resources in service when conditions demand them.

For a 100% volunteer fire department, grants such as this make a tremendous difference. Our volunteers respond with the resources provided by our community, and outside funding allows us to make major equipment improvements that would otherwise place a significant burden on our limited local budget.

We sincerely thank the U.S. Department of the Interior and Office of Wildland Fire Management for their investment in rural fire protection and in the safety of our firefighters and the communities we serve.

We would also like to recognize everyone involved in preparing the application and working through the grant process. There is a tremendous amount of work behind the scenes before an award like this becomes a reality.

$71,473. Two new wildland firefighting units. Zero local match.

A major investment in Tri-County Fire Protection District and the communities we proudly serve.
