Reading is the foundation of success for every student, and in Virginia’s classrooms, it remains one of the most powerful tools for learning, growth and future readiness. VDOE is supporting school divisions with core instructional programs (HQIM) that must be used in K-5, and additional supplemental and intervention programs to supplement the core program and to address gaps in K-8 literacy instruction classes.

State Superintendent Jenna Conway and leaders from across the state toured the Peake Childhood Center in Newport News before attending the Child Care Funding Summit: Creating Affordable Child Care for All Virginians on October 14. This meeting, organized by The Virginia Early Childhood Care and Education Commission, offered an on-the-ground look at how child care programs operate and how funding shapes access, educator compensation, quality and sustainability.

In its second year, the SPSF results point to steady growth at schools across the commonwealth, particularly at schools serving students furthest from opportunity.

Between 2025 and 2026, schools grew 4-5 points on average on the SPSF, and some of Virginia’s Title I schools demonstrated significant progress and student success. 16 out of 49 schools — the highest number ever — exited out of Comprehensive Support and Improvement status, the strictest level of federal monitoring designed to close academic gaps.
