🔥 National Fire Prevention Week is Oct. 4-10, 2026. 🔥

🫵 YOU can prevent fires at home, recycling facilities and landfills by being responsible with old batteries and electronics.

- Never place batteries of any kind in recycling containers.

- Don't remove batteries from devices when they aren't meant to be replaced.

- Take old electronics to special e-cycling events. Also, many types of batteries can be taken back to hardware and office supply stores.

See if your locality is hosting an e-cycling event: www.cvwma.com/events.

👩🏽‍🔬🔬📈 CVWMA was honored today to be a part of the fourth annual “Thinking Big” conference, hosted by the nonprofit Girls impacting Science Technology Engineering Mathematics, Inc. The event is meant to expose young people to careers in STEM and help them engage with industry professionals.

We were able to speak with hundreds of high schoolers from Richmond, Henrico, Hopewell and Petersburg about the science and business behind recycling! ♻️

Also, CVWMA Director of Recycling and Waste Management Katrina Entzminger provided a welcome to the 400+ students in attendance.

What an inspiring day!

🥦 Nominate a Food Hero in your life!

We all know someone. Could it be a neighbor always sharing a plate? A nonprofit keeping food from going to waste? Or maybe a relative who cooks up all the leftovers? Whoever they are, food heroes make a delicious difference and deserve recognition!

Compost your food scraps to support circular economies and prevent methane emissions. Composting turns organic waste into a nutrient rich soil amendment that can be used in home gardens, in landscaping, or on farms. Separating out your food scraps can help you better understand what foods typically go to waste in your home.

In Virginia, some localities provide access to food scraps drop off locations. Visit DEQ’s Crack Down on Food Waste webpage in the comments to learn more about composting opportunities near you! 👇
