The Richmond Tree Board, in conjunction with EKU natural areas, and volunteers from and EKU Parks, Recreation, and Exercise Science Dept and LGE-KU helped plant over 20 trees at the new Richmond Regional Sports Complex. This project was funded by the LG&E and KU Plant for the Planet grant, which provided matching funds for the purchase of trees and materials. Eligible grantees include projects that will improve the environment and the lives of individuals who live, work, and play near the planting area and will not interfere with utility lines. A variety of trees were planted including Swamp White Oak, Bur Oak, Yellow Poplar, KY Coffee Tree, Black Gum, and bottle Brush Buckeye, Pin Oaks, and Marmo Maples. Located behind the dog park and along the field area near the Mountain bike trail, these newly planted native trees will provide shade to future park users. A special thanks to David Brown, Tree Board Chair and Mike Land with KY Roots who provided guidance for the 13 volunteers who were onsite with the tree planting project. Over the next few years, the Richmond Tree Board plans to help with future grants, tree reforestation and invasive species removal at this facility. Thank you to all of the volunteers and professionals who helped this morning.
