It all started with a pair of flamingo-print board shorts. 🦩

As a teen in the 1980s, Fashion alum Jonathan Bennett (B.F.A. ’97) couldn’t afford the shorts he wanted. His great-grandmother had a plan: buy them on credit just long enough to make a pattern, then sew a pair together on her antique treadle machine. It sparked a lifelong love of sewing.

A decade later, he majored in Fashion Design and Merchandising at VCUarts. “I learned so much. Like, SO MUCH. It’s such a good department.”

Today he owns Unsprung Upholstery in Richmond, and his work has appeared in Architectural Digest and Better Homes & Gardens. He hopes to turn his quiet classroom space into a one-of-a-kind training hub for drapery workrooms, upholstery and slipovers for the East Coast, teaching the next generation of artisans.

Why? “Because this doesn’t exist anywhere,” he says. “And it has to exist.”

Sunni Sarkisian, a Northern Virginia native who is double-majoring in communication arts and graphic design, has family roots in Armenia. Their internship, as a user interface/user experience designer (UI/UX), was in its second-largest city, Gyumri.

When potential financial support from family fell through, Sarkisian learned about VCU’s Internship Funding Program, which defrays costs that students encounter to pursue unpaid internships.

“I’m really glad I was able to have this opportunity,” they said. “I’m also very thankful to VCU for giving me their generous funding to be able to come [to Armenia].” -Sarkisian

“I still draw. I still do music,” Davis said. “But I found something that is deeply embedded in every single thing that I wanted to do since I was a kid.”

Ashley Davis moved into VCUarts’ Photography and Film program with no prior film experience and no camera.

After Art Foundation, Davis experimented with film mediums and eventually began developing an interest in documentary filmmaking in the program. This interest led Davis to becoming the first student from VCUarts’ Photography and Film to be selected for the Yale Norfolk Summer School of Art!

This program, with 25 other students, gave independent 24-hour studio access alongside their critiques, classes, visiting artist workshops and so much more. Yale Norfolk gave Davis the opportunity to discuss artwork in a community with valuable feedback and challenged their thinking within the field.

“Little by little, the world is showing me that I’m meant to be in these spaces,” Davis said.

Ashley’s advice to other students working through uncertainty:“Keep it pushing. Fight through that doubt. And do the work that you feel like you’re meant to do.”

Join us in celebrating their accomplishments!
Congratulations Ashley!

VCUarts is proud to announce that two of our faculty members and one of our alumni are among the 12 artists and architects elected to the National Academy of Design’s class of 2026, making up a quarter of this year’s inductees! The academy confers the honor for contributions to contemporary American art and architecture.

Join us in congratulating sculptor Kendall Buster, a professor of Fine Arts; sound artist Stephen Vitiello, a professor of Kinetic Imaging; and alum and photographer Emmet Gowin (B.F.A. ’65), who were elected national academicians.

“Kendall and Stephen show our students every day what it means to live a serious creative practice, and Emmet’s six-decade career is proof of what can begin in our classrooms. Their peers across the country have recognized what we are so fortunate to witness here on campus” -Dean Higginbotham
