Exploring new ways to detect vascular disease through innovative imaging technology!

VCU Engineering postdoctoral research associate Shivam Shukla is investigating how near-infrared spectroscopy and thermal imaging can measure changes in tissue oxygenation and temperature in response to cold exposure.

Working alongside Anuradha Godavarty, Ph.D., in VCU's Optical Imaging Laboratory, Shukla is developing an approach that could help researchers better assess peripheral vascular conditions, including peripheral artery disease and Raynaud's phenomenon.

Through collaboration with VCU Health System, the team hopes to translate this early-stage research into future clinical applications.

VCU biomedical engineering researcher Amy Straka is presenting her research at the 2026 Biomedical Engineering Society - BMES Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida!

Straka is developing tissue-engineered models of the amniotic membrane to investigate why the protective sac surrounding a developing baby can rupture prematurely, increasing the risk of preterm birth.

By recreating the membrane's structure and mechanical properties in the laboratory, her research aims to uncover the mechanisms behind premature membrane rupture and identify potential targets for future treatments.

Through collaboration between VCU Engineering and clinical partners, this research highlights the power of interdisciplinary innovation in advancing maternal and fetal health.

Thank you to The Richmonder for highlighting the innovative research being conducted by Arvind Agarwal, Ph.D., chair and professor of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering at VCU!

His groundbreaking work explores ways to protect astronauts from harmful radiation during future missions to the moon, helping pave the way for safer space exploration.

We’re proud to see VCU Engineering research making an impact beyond our planet!

Space is brutal. It’s full of bombastic supernovas and the invisible radiation that ensues. Astronauts must rely on their equipment and their spacesuits to protect them from worlds they never evolved to survive.
