Cold weather is just around the corner! Is your fireplace clean and ready to "heat up!" Please share this valuable information. Thank you.

'Tis the Season ~ to light up the fireplace! Curling up in front of a warm fireplace is one of the joys of the fall and winter seasons. BUT before you light that fire, there are a few important safety tips to keep in mind.

1. Aim to minimize the buildup of soot and creosote.
2. Understand that manufactured logs burn hotter than wood.
3. Burn only wood or manufactured logs in the fireplace. Wrapping paper and foam peanuts release toxic fumes AND never burn Christmas greenery in the fireplace.
4. Beware of roaring fires.
5. Stack fireplace logs near the back of the hearth.
6. Open the damper before you light your fire.
7. Open fireplace doors.
8. Keep the area around the fireplace clear.
9. Never leave a fire unattended.
10. Open a window when you light a fire.
11. Keep the fireplace mantel clear of hanging decorations.
12. Finally, always keep a fire extinguisher handy.

Let's stay safe!

Did you know.....

that pets start nearly 1,000 fires each year?

According to the National Fire Protection Association, an estimated 500,000 pets are affected by home fires, however, nearly 1,000 house fires each year are accidentally started by the homeowner's pets.

Simple preventative measures, such as flame-less candles and stove k**b covers, can mean the difference between life and death for your four legged friends.

Be sure to extinguish open flames - Pets are generally curious and will investigate cooking appliances, candles, and even a fire in the fireplace.

Invest in flameless candles. These candles contain a light bulb rather than an open flame, and takes the danger out of your pet knocking over the candle. Cats are notorious for starting fires when their tails turn over lit candles.

Affix a Pet Alert Window Cling - write down the number of pets inside your home and attach the static cling to a front window. This critical information saves rescuers time when locating your pets. Make sure to keep this information current.

Do you have 6 minutes to spare?

What a difference 6 minutes can make! This fire on Lyndhurst Place a couple of weeks ago started in a flower pot on the front porch due to a discarded cigarette. The fire quickly spread to the vinyl porch rail and then to the vinyl siding. As you can see from the photos (taken 6 minutes apart), the fire started small but it did not take long to engulf the front of the house and destroy it. These photos are a reminder of how quickly a fire can spread and the importance of having a home escape plan in the event of a fire!
