NO MORE PUBLIC PRETENDER! Despite the workloads, despite chronic underfunding, despite being underestimated at every turn, public defense continues to reach resiliently beyond the rootbound tangle it’s been relegated to since 1963. Why? Because public defenders are devoted to their clients, dedicated to this work, and committed to growth - regardless of a challenging environment.
And when public defenders across the country go looking for training, for resources, for inspiration and innovation, they find it all - and more - at the National Association for Public Defense. We’re meeting public defenders where they’re at and collaborating to transform advocacy day by day, even as we fight to reclaim justice through better working conditions and system reform. It's an honor each and every time we get to watch a member of our community blossom.
But how much more could we accomplish for the clients of public defenders if the soil were richer in nutrients than obstacles, if we as a culture set aside the tired stereotype of the “public pretender” once and for all and took it upon ourselves to nourish public defense today? When NAPD flourishes, public defenders can THRIVE! Donate now to help us develop more resources, more training, more community, more advocacy, and more scholarship opportunities in 2026 for the national public defense community that continues to stubbornly stretch towards the sun. Let’s step into the future together and redefine what it means to be a public defender.
