We are excited to announce that Elex Children's Haven received a grant from Walmart Giving! We can't wait to use the grant to purchase essential items to help the young adults navigate the challenges associated with transitioning to independent adulthood. , ,

What is a SIL Program?

SIL is the acronym for supervised independent living. Once a child (under 18yrs old) ages out (they turn 18) then they must find other living arrangements if they have not been adopted. If the young adult does not have a plan, doesn’t feel capable, or lacks the support to successfully live independently then they can sign up for Extended Foster Care. Extended Foster Care is a voluntary program that allows a young adult to reside in a paid foster care placement after DFPS legal conservatorship ends, if the young adult is participating in qualifying activities and if there is an available placement. Extended foster care placements include foster care placements such as:
• foster family-homes;
• foster group-homes;
• residential group-care facilities;
• emergency shelters; and
• Extended foster care placements also include supervised independent living placements.

We at Elex Children’s Haven provide fully furnished corporate leased apartments to the young adults that are approved for supervised independent living. The young adult has the option to stay in the program up to 21years old.

In order to stay in one of our apartments you must be able to take initiative in completing daily tasks like cooking, cleaning, making doctor’s appointments and budgeting just to name a few. The young adult is provided with a host of support from P.AL., HAY center, case workers, mentors, counseling, and life and leadership coaching. The young adult must either be enrolled in school or work (they can do both if they choose) while in this program.

This program is not a hand out, but a hand up for those that are willing to help themselves. If you have any questions or you would like to partner with us in eradicating homelessness in foster children aging out please contact us at:
