As you stroll through the Japanese Garden, you'll notice a new bridge! 🤎 For years, this creek crossing was a simple earthen bridge. But now that Maymont has over a million guests per year, and over 60,000 guests walk through the Japanese Garden over the course of Garden Glow, the needs of the garden have changed. 👟 We wanted to create a more accessible bridge with proper handrails and intentionally redesigned it in the style of the nearby Moon Bridge (that's in front of the waterfall).

Crux Scenica did a fantastic job on this installation! 👏 Swipe through the photos for some BTS of their work! The bridge is made of locust and cedar. The traditional Japanese method of Shou Sugi Ban was used to weatherproof the wood and extend its lifespan. A natural stain made from oxidized metal makes the bridge instantly harmonize with its surroundings. 🌳

A huge thank you to Crux Scenica for approaching this project with a level of respect and care befitting a garden beloved by so many. 🫶 After Garden Glow, we will next turn our attention to replacing the Moon Bridge in the same style.
