Urgent for providers: Regulations requiring DMAS-level provider appeals to be filed and processed online only will be effective on November 5, 2026. DMAS will allow for a grace period until the end of 2026, but strict compliance will be enforced beginning January 1, 2027.

DMAS encourages all providers to consider using the Appeals Information Management System (AIMS) now to more easily file their appeals, upload documents, and track the status of the case.

After losing both parents within a year, dealing with prolonged stress, and finding out she needed brain surgery, Morgan leaned on Medicaid for help. Monthly visits to various specialists, medications, and a life-saving surgery were all covered by Medicaid.

October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, a time to honor parents and families who have experienced the loss of a pregnancy or baby.💙🩷

You are not alone. Support can help you through the grieving process. Cardinal Care offers postpartum and behavioral health support (www.dmas.virginia.gov/for-providers/benefits-services-for-providers/behavioral-health/). The Virginia Department of Health’s Pregnancy Loss Initiative (www.vdh.virginia.gov/family-planning/pregnancy-loss-services-initiative/) also connects families with grief support, counseling, community programs and other resources.

You do not have to go through a pregnancy or infant loss alone. Support is available whenever you’re ready.

October is Health Literacy Month, and understanding your health information helps you make the best choices for your care.

Here are a few tips:

✔️Write down questions before your medical appointment

✔️Ask questions during your medical appointment

✔️Repeat back what you heard to make sure you understood

✔️Message your provider afterward if you have questions about your treatment or care

The Virginia Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS) invites Virginia Medicaid advocates and community stakeholders to attend a virtual Town Hall on October 22, 2026, from 6:00–7:00 p.m.

The session will provide an overview of upcoming H.R. 1 Medicaid changes, including new federal work requirements and six-month renewals for Medicaid Expansion members. Participants will learn about key implementation dates, who may be affected, available exemptions, and resources to help eligible Virginians maintain their Medicaid coverage.

During registration, participants may submit questions in advance for Virginia Medicaid subject-matter experts to address during the Town Hall. While we may not be able to answer every question during the session, DMAS will do its best to address the topics that are most important to advocates and the members they serve.

This week is National Primary Care Week, and it’s a great time to recognize the important role health care professionals play in ensuring you and your family stay healthy.

If you haven't had a wellness visit recently, now is a good time to schedule one. Bring any questions or health concerns you want to discuss, and don't forget to thank your doctor, nurse, nurse practitioner, physician assistant and other healthcare staff for the care they provide.

Your health matters, and so does your primary care team.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to get informed and get checked. đź©·

Finding breast cancer early can make it easier to treat, which is why understanding your risks and getting the screenings recommended for you is so important.

Talk with your doctor if a family member has had breast cancer, or if you notice unusual changes like a lump, swelling, or ni**le changes or discharge. Breast cancer can affect men too, so anyone who notices changes should get checked. And if you’re due for a mammogram, don’t skip it!

Medicaid members have access to Adult Preventive Services (www.dmas.virginia.gov/for-members/benefits-and-services/adult-preventive-services/) and should talk to their primary care provider about screenings.
