Here's another great way to participate in discussions about the future of our city! ๐Ÿ›๐Ÿ“ฃ

The City of Ridgefield has been updating its comprehensive growth plan to Envision Ridgefield 2045. Required by Washington Stateโ€™s Growth Management Act, the update provides a framework for how Ridgefield will strategically manage growth the City is legally required to accommodate over the next 20 years.

For Ridgefield, the challenge is not simply planning for additional housing and jobs legally required by the Stateโ€™s Growth Management Act, but planning those changes in a way that reflects the communityโ€™s vision and hopes for the future.

Envision Ridgefield 2045 builds on the approach established in the Cityโ€™s 2016 comprehensive plan: concentrating new jobs and housing where there are the services and amenities to support it while preserving existing neighborhoods, open spaces and the character of the community.

The comprehensive plan is an important framework, but it does not stand alone in planning Ridgefieldโ€™s future. Future projects, policies, investments and more focused planning efforts will carry out the vision, each bringing opportunities for community members to shape and guide development.

The next step for Envision Ridgefield 2045 is public hearings at Planning Commission and City Council.

The waterfront design process is beginning, and thereโ€™s more to come.

New concepts and renderings for the Ridgefield Waterfront Redevelopment project were presented at todayโ€™s Port Commission meeting, offering a closer look at what the waterfront could become.

But this is just the start. The concepts are not a final plan, and the design process will continue through upcoming public meetings as the Port works through community questions about traffic, parking, public access, development scale, the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge and more.

The Port of Ridgefield Board of Commissioners approved the Portโ€™s 2027 Operating and Capital budgets after a public hearing on Monday, Oct. 5. View the approved budgets here: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/bij99gds5p93ko563uxky/ANB0qDd0qy8lMMS6LdUVO5E?rlkey=ikrqxk1mre8g17ze68cgx59us&st=itm81nnw&dl=0

In a nutshell, hereโ€™s what to know about this budget, with a brief view to the near financial future:

The Port continues to pay down debt incurred from the waterfront cleanup and construction of job-creation facilities.

The 2027 budget runs a $273,454 deficit. The Portโ€™s project fund covers it.

The Port will pay $669,164 in loan principal in 2027. The bond for the Washington Dept. of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) building is paid off in 2031.

The Port earns more from its leased properties than it collects in taxes: $1.29 million in leases against $1.15 million in taxes.

Leases from WDFW and Wisdom Ridge tenants carry the Port, netting about $487,000 after costs and debt.

2030 is the turning point from remediation to revenue positive, with revenue reaching $1.7 million a year by 2034

The Portโ€™s regularly scheduled Commission meeting starts at 3 p.m. tomorrow, Oct. 14, in the TMI Building upstairs conference room. As we prepare for that meeting, we wanted to share an update with you.

Itโ€™s exciting to see the level of community interest in Ridgefield's waterfront and the many ideas that are being shared about building a future together. Over the next several Commission meetings, we'll be digging into the details of Phase 1 with the developer, and we want to make sure there's enough time for these presentations, thoughtful discussion and public input.

To balance these priorities, we're updating our public comment procedures. Moving forward, public comments will be limited to three minutes per speaker, with one hour total reserved for comments. Speakers must sign up to provide public comments and will be called in the order they sign up, as time allows.

We also highly encourage written comments, which are an important way to share your questions and perspectives with the Commission, and be included in the public record, especially when meeting time is limited. You can email those comments to the Port at [email protected] or bring a print-out to the meeting with you.

Thank you for staying engaged as we work together to shape the future of Ridgefield's waterfront.

Itโ€™s officially feeling like fall in the Pacific Northwest! ๐Ÿ‚ Can you identify this native plant you might spot around Ridgefieldโ€™s wetlands and waterways?

๐Ÿ”Ž Clue #1: I like my feet wet! Look for me along streams, wet meadows, marshes and other riparian areas.

๐Ÿ”Ž Clue #2: Earlier in the summer, I stood out with tall, fuzzy-looking clusters of tiny pink to rosy-purple flowers.

๐Ÿ”Ž Clue #3: By September, those colorful blooms are giving way to brown seed clusters that can remain on my branches well into fall.

๐Ÿ”Ž Clue #4: I often grow in dense thickets, providing valuable cover for birds and other wildlife.

๐Ÿ”Ž Clue #5: Pollinators love my summer flowers โ€” and I'm an important part of healthy Pacific Northwest wetland habitat.

๐ŸŒฑ BONUS CLUE: I'm a member of the rose family, but you won't find any roses growing on me!

Think you know this week's mystery plant? ๐Ÿ‘€

Drop your guess in the comments, and we'll reveal the answer tomorrow!

What can we learn from other Washington waterfronts? ๐Ÿง

Next stop: Willapa Harbor. ๐Ÿ“

This one caught our attention for a special reason: like Ridgefield, the Port of Willapa Harbor shares one of its key waterways โ€” Willapa Bay โ€” with a national wildlife refuge. ๐ŸŒฟ

Willapa Bay is home to the Willapa National Wildlife Refuge, protecting estuaries, wetlands, forests, streams, beaches and habitat used by more than 200 bird species. ๐Ÿฆ†๐Ÿฆข๐Ÿฆ‰

At the same time, the communityโ€™s waterfront remains a working one. ๐Ÿ—

The Port of Willapa Harbor supports commercial fishing and shellfish farming, marine businesses, industrial and commercial tenants, recreational boating and tourism. The Port also specifically calls for integrating compatible recreation into Port facilities whenever possible. ๐ŸŽฃ๐Ÿ›ฅ

And nature itself is part of the area's economic identity. The Port highlights birdwatching, kayaking, water trails and hiking among Willapa Bay's ecotourism opportunities. ๐Ÿ›ถ

That's especially interesting to us in Ridgefield. ๐Ÿ‘€

What opportunities come from coexisting with an incredible natural resource? Could redevelopment of the Portโ€™s neighboring property help people experience and appreciate the landscape differently? Wildlife viewing areas? Trails? Interpretive displays? Native landscaping? Quiet places to sit and watch the river? ๐ŸŒ…

Ridgefield isn't Willapa Harbor, and we're not looking to copy it. We're looking for ideas that can help Ridgefield create something uniquely its own, respecting nature while creating economic opportunities for everyone in our community. โœ…

Follow the Waterfront design process: This fall, the Board of Commissioners will hear a series of presentations in public meetings as detailed design work gets underway. The concepts shared earlier this year were initial concepts, and summer engagement identified important questions about traffic, parking, development scale, sustainability, public access and more.

Now itโ€™s time to dig into those details. There's still a lot of work to do, and still a lot to learn.

Follow the process and see upcoming meeting topics and dates on our website.

Explore the Ridgefield waterfront development, a vibrant community space with parks, retail, and housing, fostering local engagement and growth.
