During the Early Bird Seminar, Austin Gilbert, Esq., led an informative session titled “More Than Words on Paper: Policies That Support Student Well-Being.” The session examined how school board policies can play a meaningful role in addressing some of the most pressing challenges affecting students and their overall well-being.

Gilbert reviewed important statistics related to substance abuse, parental involvement, and su***de prevention, providing participants with a clearer picture of the issues facing students and school communities. The session also explored the state policies and requirements connected to these areas, helping participants better understand the relationship between policy, prevention, and student support.

The session reinforced the idea that effective policies must be more than words on paper—they should provide a framework for schools and communities to create supportive environments where students can feel safe, connected, and equipped to succeed.

The 2026 MSBA Policy Conference began with an insightful and timely presentation, “The Silent Challenge: Student Mental Health” from Dr. Donna Scott.

Dr. Scott’s presentation highlighted the mental health challenges facing students by examining both state and national data on student distress. Beyond the data, Dr. Scott equipped conference participants with practical, proactive strategies and greater awareness to help notice, connect, and respond to signs of distress and better understand the needs of today’s students.

By prioritizing student well-being and fostering supportive school environments, school leaders are informed with the tools to create foundational systems for students to thrive.

The Policy Conference continues with "More Than Words on Paper: Policies that Support Student Well-Being" by Austin Gilbert, Esq.
