🎉🐴 IT’S OFFICIAL: ROMANCH’S LAW HAS PASSED! 🐴🎉

Today, the NYC Council voted to END horse-drawn carriages in New York City. 🗳️✅

After DECADES of fighting, failed bills, and too many lives lost, New York has finally said: no more. 💪

Here’s what Romanch’s Law does:
🚫 No new carriage licenses, starting now
🐎 Carriages off NYC streets by June 1, 2028
🤝 A transition plan for carriage workers

THANK YOU to Speaker Julie Menin, Council Member Chris Marte, Council Member Harvey Epstein, Health Chair Lynn Schulman, Majority Leader Shaun Abreau, Council Member Shahana Hanif, the Animal Welfare Caucus, every co-sponsor and Council Member who voted YES, and Mayor Mamdani for committing to sign Intro 943 into law. 🙌

And thank YOU. Every email, every call, every rally. You made this happen. 📣

This is what political power for animals looks like. 🔥

Next stop: Mayor Mamdani’s signature. ✍️

🐴 ROMANCH’S LAW JUST PASSED THE HEALTH COMMITTEE! 🐴

Today, the NYC Council Health Committee voted YES on Romanch’s Law (Intro 943), the bill to end horse-drawn carriages in New York City. ✅

This is the furthest a carriage ban has EVER gotten in this city. Every previous bill died in committee. Not this one. 💪

But we’re not done yet. The FULL Council votes TODAY AT 1:30 PM EST. 🗳️

Thank you to Speaker Julie Menin, Health Chair Lynn Schulman, sponsor Council Member Chris Marte, and every co-sponsor who signed on to protect horses and New Yorkers. 🙌

This is what political power for animals looks like. Let’s finish it. 🔥

Diana is a fierce advocate for building a more compassionate New York, where animals are protected, and the people who care for them are supported. She has championed multiple animal protection bills during her time as Deputy Speaker in the NYC Council, including the bill to prohibit the sale of guinea pigs in pet shops! She also was the first to introduce our bill to prohibit the sale of birds in NYC!

A vote for Diana is a vote for animals!

Statement from Voters For Animal Rights on Council Member Ariola’s Last-Minute Betrayal on Romanch’s Law:

Voters For Animal Rights is deeply disappointed by Council Member Joann Ariola’s decision to reverse her support for Romanch’s Law. Council Member Ariola was among the very first co-sponsors of this legislation, and her early commitment helped build the momentum that brought it to the brink of passage. By abandoning that commitment now, as the Council prepares to vote, she has failed the horses, the public, and the Mahajan family.

The facts have not changed since Council Member Ariola first signed on. Romanch’s Law will end the use of horse carriages on New York City streets, protecting horses from a lifetime of labor in traffic, protecting the New Yorkers and visitors who share those streets, and providing a just transition for the workers in the industry. These were the reasons she supported this bill. Those reasons remain, and the need for this legislation has only grown more urgent.

The only thing that has changed is Council Member Ariola’s position. Elected officials are accountable for the commitments they make, and walking away from one of this consequence, at this moment, will not go unnoticed by the voters who care deeply about this issue.

Voters For Animal Rights stands unequivocally with Speaker Julie Menin, Mayor Zohran Mamdani, and the 29 other co-sponsors of Romanch’s Law, who have shown the courage and consistency this moment demands. They are on the right side of history.

Above all, we stand with the family of Romanch Mahajan. In the midst of unimaginable grief, they have advocated tirelessly for this prohibition so that no other family has to endure the loss they have suffered. They have kept their word to New York City. Council Member Ariola should have kept hers.
