๐Ÿ’œ DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH | THROUGH THEIR EYES

โ€œI haven't seen my friends in a few weeks. He gets jealous so easily. If I don't respond right away, he blows up my phone. He says it's because he cares and doesn't want to lose me. I know he loves me... right?โ€

May 2 โ€” A teenage girl's diary.

At first, he made her feel special. He wanted to spend every minute with her. He told her she was different from other girls, that nobody understood him the way she did.

She thought it was love.

But slowly, things began to change.

He didn't like her friends. He questioned who she was talking to. He got angry when she didn't answer his messages immediately. And when she tried to explain how she felt, he told her she was overreacting.

Now, she spends more time worrying about making him angry than enjoying their relationship.

She's never been hit. But that doesn't mean she isn't experiencing abuse.

Emotional abuse and controlling behavior can be difficult to recognize, especially for teenagers navigating their first relationships.

Parents, caregivers, and friends โ€” know the warning signs of teen dating abuse:
โ€ข Constant monitoring:A partner demands immediate responses to texts, calls, or messages.
โ€ข Extreme jealousy: They become angry when their partner spends time with friends or family.
โ€ข Isolation: They discourage friendships, family relationships, or activities outside the relationship.
โ€ข Manipulation: They use guilt, threats, or accusations to control their partner's decisions.
โ€ข Emotional intimidation: Their partner feels like they're constantly walking on eggshells.
โ€ข Blaming and minimizing: They dismiss hurtful behavior with phrases like "You're too sensitive" or "I only act this way because I love you."
โ€ข Loss of independence: A teenager begins changing their clothing, behavior, friendships, or routines to avoid upsetting their partner.

How can we help?

๐Ÿ’œ Start conversations early. Talk with teenagers about healthy relationships, boundaries, trust, and respect.

๐Ÿ’œ Listen without judgment. Avoid criticizing their partner or making them feel embarrassed about their relationship.

๐Ÿ’œ Take their concerns seriously. Emotional abuse is real, even when there are no physical injuries.

๐Ÿ’œ Keep communication open. Let them know they can come to you without fear of punishment or an angry reaction.

๐Ÿ’œ Help them find support. Encourage them to speak with a trusted adult, school counselor, or domestic violence advocate.

And to every teenager reading this:

Jealousy is not proof of love. Control is not protection. Constant monitoring is not affection.

You should never have to give up your friends, your family, or your sense of self to keep someone else happy.

A healthy relationship should let you be yourself, maintain friendships, set boundaries, and feel safe expressing your feelings.

If something about your relationship doesn't feel right, trust that feeling. Talk to someone you trust.

For confidential teen dating abuse support, visit loveisrespect.org, call 866-331-9474, or text LOVEIS to 22522.

This diary is fictional. The reality of teen dating abuse is not.

๐Ÿ’œ Love shouldn't hurt. We believe you. We support you. Let's end the cycleโ€”together.

๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿพ A Little Kindness Goes a Long Way! ๐Ÿ’™

A HUGE thank you to the amazing fourth graders at Graham Mesa Elementary School!

These wonderful young citizens have been learning about the power of kindness, and we are so grateful they chose the R***e Police Department and our friends at Colorado River Rescue to share a little of that kindness!

The students surprised us with beautiful thank-you cards filled with thoughtful messages, kind words, and appreciation. You absolutely made our day! ๐Ÿ’™

And let's not forget K9 Apollo! ๐Ÿพ He was more than happy to accept ALL the pets and attention from his new friends. We're pretty sure he thinks kindness should always include belly rubs!

To the students and teachers at Graham Mesa, thank you for reminding us that even the smallest acts of kindness can make a BIG difference.

Keep spreading that kindness, kids! Our community is a better place because of young people like you! ๐Ÿ’™

March 18 โ€” A husband's diary.

When we think about domestic violence, we don't always picture a man as the victim. But men experience domestic violence, too. And for many, admitting what's happening can be incredibly difficult.

He loves his wife. He remembers the good days. He wants to believe her apologies and promises that things will change.

But he's also afraid in his own home.

He would never raise a hand against his wife. Yet he's embarrassed to admit that she's been physically hurting him. He worries people will laugh, question his masculinity, or simply refuse to believe him.

So he stays quiet. And he keeps hoping tomorrow will be different.

Recognizing signs of abuse in men:

โ€ข Unexplained injuries or repeated excuses for bruises and scratches.
โ€ข Withdrawing from friends, family, or activities they once enjoyed.
โ€ข Appearing anxious or fearful about upsetting their partner.
โ€ข Being constantly criticized, humiliated, threatened, or belittled.
โ€ข Having their finances, communications, or movements controlled.
โ€ข Making excuses for their partner's aggressive or controlling behavior.
โ€ข Expressing shame, embarrassment, or feeling that no one would believe them.

๐—›๐—ผ๐˜„ ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐˜„๐—ฒ ๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ฝ?

โ€ข Take him seriously. Abuse is abuse, regardless of who is experiencing it.
โ€ข Listen without judgment. It may have taken tremendous courage for him to speak up.
โ€ข Avoid stereotypes. Physical strength does not protect someone from emotional or physical abuse.
โ€ข Don't tell him to fight back. Retaliation can escalate an already dangerous situation.
โ€ข Respect his decisions. Offer support without pressuring him to leave before he's ready.
โ€ข Help him find resources. Domestic violence advocates and safety planning services are available to men, too.

For confidential assistance, contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at ๐Ÿด๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿฌ-๐Ÿณ๐Ÿต๐Ÿต-๐—ฆ๐—”๐—™๐—˜ (๐Ÿณ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿฏ) or visit ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ต๐—ผ๐˜๐—น๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฒ.๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ด. If you are in immediate danger, call 911.

They help address code concerns, assist with animal-related calls, work with residents to find solutions, support our officers, help at community events, and tackle plenty of other tasks that don't always make it into a social media post.

A big part of their job is simply working with people. Code enforcement isn't just about rulesโ€”it's about education, problem-solving, communication, and helping keep our neighborhoods safe, clean, and welcoming.

Dawn and Alan approach that work with professionalism, patience, compassion, and a genuine commitment to the people who call R***e home.

Thank you, Dawn and Alan, for caring for our community and being such an important part of the R***e Police Department. ๐Ÿ’™
