ππ₯ **A Little Smoke at the Fire Station and a giant sloth?... It Was Just Training!** π₯π
Riggins City Fire Department has officially kicked off a new firefighter training program, and weβre pretty excited about it!
This new program was put together by former Lewiston Fire Department Chief **Travis Myklebust** through his company, **Ignite and Inspire Strategies**. The program is designed with volunteer fire departments in mind β departments like ours that work with limited staffing, limited resources, and whatever training props we can get our hands on. The training is built around what we have available and, more importantly, what we need to be ready for the calls we get here in our little corner of Idaho.
Our first training session focused on **search operations**. Our firefighters practiced entering residential structures through doors and windows, working in different visibility conditions, searching rooms systematically, locating victims, and getting them safely out of the structure. Some of the drills were done individually, while others required firefighters to work together as a team, and yes our victim today was a giant stuffed sloth π¦₯ π€π
It was a great first step in what will be an ongoing training program for our department.
Our next training session starts **October 1st**, and weβll be getting down to business with **hose lays, hose deployment, and fireground hose-handling tactics**. ππ¦
And for all of our neighbors who looked over at the fire station today and thought, *βWell...that can't be good.β* π
**Don't worry β we were just smoking the place up!**
We finished today's training with a good, old-fashioned smoke-filled search drill. We filled the upstairs classroom with smoke so our firefighters could practice searching in the kind of low-visibility conditions they may encounter during an actual structure fire.
We know seeing smoke pouring out of the fire station isn't exactly the most comforting sight for the neighborhood, so we appreciate everyone's patience while we put in the work. And if you saw us crawling around in there, that's not because we forgot where the coffee was β it was all part of the drill! βπ
As a volunteer department, training takes time, effort, and a lot of commitment from our members. We're proud of the men and women who continue to show up, put in the work, and sharpen their skills so that when the pager goes off, we're ready to go to work.
**From our firehouse to our community β we're training, we're learning, and we're getting better.** π₯π
