(243)

Ringwood Manor is a National Historic Landmark district, having historical importance spanning from Native Americans occupation through the early 20th century. The surrounding Ramapo Mountains' rich magnetite iron deposits allowed the area to become a major iron supplier and home to a succession of ironmasters from the colonial period through the early 20th century. During the Gilded Age, Ringwood Manor became a large summer estate for partners Peter Cooper and Abram S. In 1938, the house, its contents, and the surrounding property were donated by the family to the State of New Jersey as a museum and a state park. With original historical structures, gardens, and landscapes on 582 acres and extensive historical collections illustrative of family life, community, industry and culture, Ringwood Manor is a unique repository of American history. Today, Ringwood Manor is a central part of Ringwood State Park and administered by the NJ Department of Environmental Protection, Division of Parks and Forestry. The North Jersey Highlands Historical Society is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit and an Officially Recognized Friends Organization for Ringwood Manor.

🎨 🖌 We aren't the only ones awed by the autumn colors of the area. Many of the famous Hudson River School painters also found inspiration in the beauty of the Ramapo Mountain region! Many of these artists would paint "en plein air," actively painting outdoors to try and capture the light and colors of what a person would see when actually standing in the environment. The Hewitt family collected numerous works from the Hudson River School of artists and Ringwood Manor is lucky enough to have four works by Jasper Francis Cropsey. Cropsey lived not far from Ringwood Manor in Warwick, NY, and many of his works depict rural landscapes that the Hewitt family would have been very familiar with. Perhaps that's why they owned so many of them!

Picture here are works entitled: "Greenwood Lake" c. 1876; "Storm King on the Hudson" c. 1872; "Sunset with Sailboat- Greenwood Lake" c. 1876; and "Upper Hudson" c. 1872."

Which is your favorite view? Do you recognize any of the features depicted during Cropsey's lifetime?

🎉 On this day in 1859, Miss Sarah Cooper Hewitt was born! "Miss Sally" was a highly intelligent and precocious child, and that same mental acuity and creativeness carried into her adult years. Known today for her involvement in creating the Cooper Hewitt museum, she also had a fondness of horses and the theater. In the collection of Ringwood Manor's archives is a play she began to write entitled, "The Impressions of a Stage Horse," which was cleverly written from the horse's point of view! In this photograph, Miss Sally is seen around age 10, posed in a photographer's studio standing behind a faux balcony, looking like a character out of a fairy tale, and showing off her acting skills by wistfully looking into the distance.

Happy 167th Birthday, Miss Sally Hewitt!

On this day, in 1780, Surveyor General and iron master Robert Erskine died at age 45. Up to that time, Erskine was fully engaged in assisting with efforts to gain independence, providing iron cannonballs and equipment to the Continental Army; drawing maps & surveys for George Washington; and contributing his design for the marine chevaux de frise to block British ships from accessing waterways. On September 18th, Erskine's nephew noted that his uncle caught a "severe cold and sore throat, which produced a fever, and within the space of a fortnight terminated in his dissolution." Robert Erskine was then buried in the cemetery on the property at Ringwood Manor.

Shortly after his passing, the newspaper Pennsylvania Packet published an obituary memorializing Erskine. It noted the he was "a man in whom united the Christian and the gentleman. His integrity and unbounded benevolence have rendered his death as a loss to the public, and a subject of sincere regret to all his acquaintances. He made the laws of justice the invariable rule of his conduct, and upon this principle espoused the cause of America, in which he served his country with approbation and universal esteem."

His tabletop grave can still be visited today and is inscribed: "In memory of Robert Erskine, F.R.S., Geographer & Surveyor General to the Army of the United States of America. Born Sept. 7, 1735. Died Oct. 2, 1780. Aged 45 years and 25 days." The image below was taken c. 1900 and shows Abram S. Hewitt (at left) and two of his sons standing in the Ringwood Manor cemetery. Erskine's tabletop grave is at right in the image. The broken oak tree behind the grave was said to have been planted by George Washington upon visiting the site of Erskine's burial.
