A big THANK YOU going out to Jeff Burton (orange t-shirt), a Class II Wastewater Operator with the City of Ripley. Jeff provided a tour of Ripley's new Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) wastewater treatment plant to our Class II Wastewater course students today. The students had many questions, that he gladly answered. We will share more photos when we get a chance to download them.

It was a great learning experience for all. THANKS JEFF!

Our Class I students were able to take a tour of the Huntington Sanitary Board’s wastewater treatment plant on Wednesday. It was a great opportunity for them to see in-person some of the treatment components that they have been learning about but that their plants may not have. Chief of Operations Scott Kelley also shared some information on how the plant is being upgraded. The upgrade work has already began, as you can in the photo of the construction area where the new secondary clarifiers will sit.

A big THANK YOU to Scott & all of the HSB staff that made our visit possible! And kudos to our students for having zero complaints about visiting the plant on a day when the temperature was scorching hot. 🥵

The Huntington Sanitary Board (HSB) is hosting our Class I Wastewater Certification Course this week. On Monday morning, HSB Wastewater Treatment Plant Operations Superintendent, Scott Kelley and Safety Director Ally Napier brought a crew over to our meeting space, unloaded our materials & turned the room into a classroom in a jif! THANK YOU!

Scott also took the time out of his very busy schedule to talk to the operators- in-training about what it means to be a professional wastewater operator yesterday morning.

We have students from 18 different utilities/facilities around the State in class this week.

Our community project this year has been helping find homes for some sweet cats.

The tortoiseshell is ~ 4 according to the vet. She has been tested and was negative for the big 3 cat diseases and had all of her vaccines and boosters, including leukemia. She is completely domesticated and just about the best cat you could find. She will lap sit or sit quietly by herself if it isn't cuddle time. She was indoor/outdoor but any relocated cat will have to be kept inside for at least 30 days, to get acclimated and know that is their new home.

The gray and white kitten is male, is approximately 4 months old, has been neutered, tested and fully vaccinated. He's a little timid but plays and will crawl into your lap for cuddles.

If you are interested in adopting either of these sweethearts, please email us at [email protected] or text the office cell at (304) 377-7579.

Congratulations to all 12 of our Backflow Tester Certification students!! They all passed both their written and hands-on exams this morning. They worked hard this week and it paid off.

Also, a big THANK YOU to our instructor, Gary Espenschied who gives 110% to his students, every time!

And a shout out to Alex Grimmett (green shirt, beard) of the State Health Department's Certification and Training section for coming up to talk to the students about what they need to submit for their license and the renewal process. Thanks Alex!

A big THANK YOU going out to the City of Martinsburg and their WWTP Chief Operator Kenny Michaels (on the right in Martinsburg staff group photo-long sleeve dark gray shirt) for hosting our 2026 Class A certification course last week. The Class A course is a certification required for plants that have limits that require advanced treatment systems/operations to meet their NPDES Permit limits. The class was taught by Rich Weigand.

The wastewater treatment plants that discharge to the Chesapeake Bay have total nitrogen and total phosphorous limits in their NPDES permits, making Martinsburg an idea location for Class A Training. The more stringent permit limits in the eastern part of the state are due to the long-term water quality issues in the Chesapeake Bay, caused by large quantities of nutrients being discharged from both wastewater treatment plants and stormwater runoff.

The City of Martinsburg upgraded to a moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) in 2016. This type of plant is designed to provide total nitrogen and total phosphorous removal. In the first month of operation the facility reduced the pounds of total nitrogen in their final effluent by more than 80% and pounds of total phosphorus by more than 70%.

Rich said that Chief Operator Kenny Michaels did a great job of explaining the MBBR process and gave the students a full tour of the plant.

This class included classroom and hands on rubber glove training. During the detailed field trip the students collected and analyzed samples and completed profiles on various operational parameters, allowing them to observe the effectiveness of the various treatment components.

Also, a big thanks to the Martinsburg Lab Manager Louis Gainer (on left in Martinsburg group photo) for demonstrating the use of their spectrophotometer and using it to analyze samples during class.

Also, a special shout out to Ed Tennant, Chief Operator of the Harpers Ferry Bolivar PSD (Bass Pro T-shirt) for assisting Rich with this class. He pitched in from the set-up to the clean-up and was an integral part of a successful field trip.

THANK YOU GUYS!!

We updated the schedule below. We had the wrong date for Drinking Water II on the schedule in yesterday's post and we had omitted the Class II Wastewater dates. We edited the post with the Aug 6 version. Sorry for the confusion.
