Do You Tow a Trailer? Get Ready for a Change Coming January 1
Keeping your vehicle information up-to-date is especially important if you tow a trailer.
Beginning January 1, 2027, a new Maryland law will change how tolls may be collected for Class G vehicles when the toll cannot be associated with the towing vehicle. Class G vehicles include boat, utility, camping and travel, horse and equipment trailers, as well as semitrailers.
This is NOT a new toll. You will not be charged twice. Vehicles towing trailers have always been subject to the appropriate toll rate.
The law helps ensure tolls are properly assigned when an E-ZPass transponder cannot be read, the towing vehicle’s license plate cannot be identified or the trailer is the only readable license plate.
Take a few minutes now to prepare:
• Add your trailer’s Class G license plate to your E-ZPass Maryland account.
• Make sure your E-ZPass transponder is mounted correctly.
• Keep your license plates clean, visible and unobstructed.
• If someone else may tow your trailer, share these Class G towing requirements and best practice
