During the 1990s, the Ultra 30 Grand Prix Circuit (known as the Formula 1 of the yachting world) was held in the UK, and the 10-year series was at that time the only televised race circuit on the BBC, incorporating an on-board cameraman in later years. The Ultra 30s competed in 30-minute races over very short courses close to the shore at speeds of over 25 knots, entertaining spectators and the more than 8 million television viewers who tuned in during the last 2 years of the series. Some of the world's best dinghy sailors and Olympic medalists skippered the Ultra 30s including Ben Ainslie, Eddie Warden Owen, Rob Greenhalgh, and many others. In the U.S., similar boats called Ultimate 30s competed in the televised Ultimate Yacht Race series in the late 1980s.
