Did you know that citrus fruit, like navel oranges, is still harvested by hand? Each harvest season, farm workers set up ladders that help them reach our famed Washington Navel Oranges. They use special clippers with a curved blade that follows the natural contour of the orange, which prevents them from piercing the skin. And each worker carries a bag that can hold up to 90lbs of fruit.

Happy Earth Day! ๐
Our park is home to several California native species of plants, like this California Buckwheat. It is a drought-tolerant plant that can withstand the harsh arid climate in Riverside. This plant blossoms with beautiful white flowers that grow in interesting geometric clusters. They are also a critical food source for a lot of our resident pollinators, such as honey bees. This Earth Day, here are some ways you can help be a good environmental steward: stay on the trail to avoid erosion, and dispose of all organic material, like citrus peels, in the appropriate garbage receptacles. ๐
