🕷️ How to Deal With Creepy Crawlies in Your Yard: Aphids

Aphids may be tiny, but they can cause big problems for your plants. Here’s what to look out for and how to tackle them:

🌿 Their Damage:
Aphids can curl leaves, cause leaves to turn yellow, stunt plant growth, and spread plant viruses.

🔎 How to Tackle:
• Check the undersides of leaves for aphids.
• Wash small infestations away with a strong stream of water.
• Prune heavily affected parts of the plant.
• Encourage natural predators, such as ladybugs.
• Keep ants under control, since they can protect aphids from predators.

A little monitoring can go a long way toward keeping your plants healthy! 🌱

🍂🎃 Don’t spook away the neighbors with your wilted plants!
October is a great time to get your garden ready for cooler weather. Here are a few actions to take this month, according to the UC Master Gardener Program of Riverside County:

🌱 Clean out vegetable and flower beds to help prevent pests and disease
🍁 Rake leaves from ditches and mulch or compost the rest
💧 Adjust drip irrigation timers for cooler weather
🌷 Mulch bulbs and tubers for protection
🌳 Prune and fertilize lawns, fruit trees, and seasonal plants
🌿 Plant trees, shrubs, perennials, and spring bulbs
🌾 Reseed bare lawn spots or consider reducing your lawn
🌱 Sow cover crops to help control erosion and improve soil health

A little fall maintenance can help keep your garden healthy through the cooler months.

🐾 Why is it important for people to scoop the p**p?
Just Ask the Kids! 💬

Isaiah P., a local 7th grade student from the City of Thousand Palms, says:
“It is important to scoop p**p to avoid people from stepping in it and dragging it elsewhere. P**p carries bacteria that can be harmful to humans and make people sick. What inspired me to make this sign is to make awareness to people that p**p can make others sick. And how important it is to keep our environment clean for all.”

🌿 Thank you to everyone who joined our Yard Summer Spruce Up!

We asked Riverside County residents to share how they’re making their yards more water-wise, and you delivered! 💧 From fixing leaks and checking for runoff to adjusting watering schedules, planting low-water plants, adding mulch, and more, you shared some great ideas.

We’re excited to highlight a few of the ways your neighbors are sprucing up their yards and using water wisely.

And a big congratulations to Linda from Nuevo, our Yard Summer Spruce Up giveaway winner! 🎉

Thanks again for participating and sharing what you’re doing in your own yard. We hope these ideas inspire you to try something new, too!

🐾 Myth busted! 💥💩

Think dog waste belongs in the yard waste bin? Not so fast! Even though it’s natural waste, dog p**p can contain harmful bacteria and parasites. Putting it in the yard waste bin can introduce those pathogens into materials that may be composted or processed for reuse.

So what should you do? Bag it, tie it, and put it in the trash. 🗑️

It’s a small step that helps keep our neighborhoods clean, protects our watershed, and keeps unwanted "extras" out of the compost pile. 🌿💧

🎃 There’s something spooky lurking on our sidewalks, and it’s not a ghost. 👻

It’s dog waste. 💩

When rain comes along, those forgotten piles can wash into storm drains, carrying bacteria and parasites with them. And here’s the really icky part: just one gram of dog p**p can contain millions of f***l coliform bacteria. 🦠 Nobody wants their neighborhood, favorite creek, river, or swimming spot to get a scary surprise from someone’s pup. 🐶

So this October, let’s keep the creepy crawlies where they belong and the p**p out of our storm drains. Scoop it, bag it, and toss it in the trash! 🗑️

Request your FREE dog waste canister at RCWatershed.org/dog-owners/ to help you spook the p**p from your yard! Want to help encourage others to scoop the p**p? Comment below to nominate your neighborhood for a chance to win a “This Neighborhood Scoops the P**p” yard sign! 🐾💩🎃

🐾 Why is it important for people to scoop the p**p?
Just Ask the Kids! 💬

Sarah A., a local 4th grade student from the City of Wildomar, says:
“People sometimes wear fancy shoes going on walks, or just walking from your car to the store you are parked in front of. And sometimes when you are walking there, you step on it, what? An icky pile of p**p! And it is not your job to pick it up. It is the person who owns the dog. That is why you should pick it up.”
