BREAKING: Downtown Hotel / Old Fire Station Ruling – a Win for Historic Preservation
In the case of Old Riverside Foundation et al vs. the City of Riverside and Greens Group, Riverside Superior Court Judge Chad Firetag has issued a tentative ruling in favor of Old Riverside Foundation and historic preservation, determining that the proposed hotel project at the location of the old fire station at Mission Inn and Lemon may not proceed as approved by the city and must undergo CEQA review and conform to the Downtown Specific Plan. It is expected that a hearing scheduled for Friday June 2 will be dismissed, as neither party is contesting the ruling at this time.
The California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) provides a framework to mitigate the impact of development on environmental resources, including the historic built environment. Judge Firetag ruled that the proposed project improperly bypassed CEQA review and must go through that process before proceeding, and prove that it will not negatively affect the fabric of historic Downtown Riverside.
Other parties joining Old Riverside Foundation in this action were the Mission Inn, First Congregational Church, and an individual who conducts business in the adjacent Life Arts Building.
Old Riverside Foundation will continue to monitor this project as it goes through its next steps, and we’ll continue to advocate for the preservation of our unique cultural resources.
