FROM RIVERSIDE POLICE DEPARTMENT
MASS SHOOTING IN ORLANDO, FLORIDA
Friends:
As you have probably heard by now, at approximately 2:00 a.m., Eastern time (11:00 p.m. Saturday night locally) there was a mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. At least 50 people are dead and another 53 injured. This casualty list makes this the deadliest mass shooting in the history of the United States.
This message is to let you know that the Riverside Police Department is actively monitoring the events in Orlando and we are in regular communications with our partners in the Homeland Security community. At this time, it does not appear that there is any local connection to the Orlando tragedy but we have stepped up visible and covert patrols around LGBT institutions and around various houses of worship.
We want the community to know that your safety is the highest priority for the RIverside Police Department. We also encourage all community members to report any suspicious activity to the RPD. Finally, we pray that this latest act of hate by one individual is not the cause for division and distrust among people of good will whose belief systems differ. Our city has a long and proud history of solidarity and looking out for each other. This most recent tragedy won't change that.
Please know that your police department will continue to serve all our communities with vigilance and valor.
God Bless you and God Bless our nation.
Sergio Diaz
Chief of Police

Our deepest apologies for not saying anything yesterday, but yesterday, (6/6/11) was the ninth anniversary of Jeffery Owens murder. He will never be forgotten, and we will never be silent. Although it is a very sad day in our history, it is also a very important day as well. As a result of Jeffery's death, the Jeffery Owens Community Center was formed in his honor. The circumstances were very unfortunate, the community knew something had to be done. We all love you Jeffery, and you will never be forgotten.

Thanks to everyone who attended the brunch today! It was a fabulaus time, and thanks to all of our sponsors and volunteers. Cinco de mayo was Jeffery's favorite holiday, so it was a great way to remember him!
