A Michigan lumber baron named Wellington R. Burt left behind one of the most unusual wills in American history when he died in 1919. Bitter family disputes led Burt to stipulate that 99% of his fortune could not be distributed until 21 years after the death of his last surviving grandchild. At the time of his death, Burt was one of the wealthiest men in the United States, with vast holdings in lumber, railroads, and real estate.

Because of this clause, his estate remained locked in trusts for decades as generations passed away. The final condition of the will was not satisfied until nearly a century later, when the last grandchild died, triggering the countdown. As the money remained invested over time, the power of compound interest dramatically increased the value of the estate.

In 2011, approximately 92 years after Burt’s death, his distant descendants finally inherited the fortune, which had grown to an estimated $100–$110 million. The money was divided among a dozen relatives, many of whom had never met Burt.
