Sounds good
Since it’s nearing the end of Florida Archaeology Month it seems like a good idea to share some Florida focused archaeology books.
Although this book is a few years old “New Directions in the Search for the First Floridians" including chapters by James M. Adovasio, David Pedler, and Shannon N. Byers, is a must-read for anyone interested in pre-contact archaeology! The authors present cutting-edge research on the earliest inhabitants of Florida and their complex relationship with the changing environment.
The the authors present new evidence and interpretations regarding the first human occupation of Florida, including:
1. The identification of a previously unknown culture called the Suwannee-Simpson, who were living in Florida over 14,000 years ago.
2. A new understanding of the changing climate and environment during the prehistoric period, which influenced the behavior and technology of the early inhabitants.
3. The discovery of new archaeological sites and materials that challenge traditional assumptions about the age and character of the first Floridians, such as evidence of shellfish gathering and the use of stone tools.
Overall, the book provides a comprehensive and innovative perspective on the complexity of pre-contact Florida, shedding light on one of the most fascinating and still poorly understood periods.
