At exactly 12:00 on July 4th 2026, five fearless cardboard creations launched onto the waters of Lake Roaming Rock for what would become one of the most entertaining races in nautical history. The fleet, Cotton Candy Dream, Freedom, Blue Whale, The Monster, and Firework Splash set off with every crew convinced their masterpiece was built on engineering brilliance rather than equal parts duct tape, cardboard, and optimism.

The race remained neck-and-neck until Freedom suddenly decided it had experienced enough "freedom" and in spectacular fashion, the boat floundered and sank, leaving Captain Ruby and Crewman Sunday heroically clinging to the floating remains like shipwreck survivors auditioning for a pirate movie.

As if that weren't enough excitement, Cotton Candy Dream reached the halfway point only to discover that having a sturdy bottom is, in fact, a fairly important feature for a boat. With impeccable comic timing, the floor gave way, and Captain Skylar vanished into the lake in one unforgettable splash.

Meanwhile, Captain Douglas had The Monster roaring around the halfway mark with a commanding lead, looking nearly impossible to catch. But Captain Mackenna and Crewman Delaney had other plans! Powering Firework Splash with surprising speed, they surged past the stunned Monster in the closing stretch to capture a dramatic come-from-behind victory.

Not to be overlooked, Captain Emaline and the Blue Whale endured enough navigational detours to justify a brand-new GPS. Despite the wandering course, she persevered and safely guided her vessel back to shore, claiming a well-earned third-place finish and proving that sometimes simply making it back in one piece is its own kind of championship.

When the cardboard settled and the splashing stopped, the results were clear:

1st Place: Firework Splash — Captain Mackenna & Crewman Delaney Lawson
2nd Place: The Monster — Captain Douglas Day
3rd Place: Blue Whale — Captain Emaline O’Hara

The rest of the fleet may not have finished quite as planned, but they certainly succeeded in providing the biggest laughs, the most memorable sinkings, and another unforgettable Fourth of July tradition at Lake Roaming Rock.

Cotton Candy Dream – Captain Skylar Day
Freedom – Captain Ruby & Crewman Sunday Zufall – MOST SPECTACULAR SINKING 2026
Firework Splash - Captain Mackenna & Crewman Delaney Lawson – MOST CREATIVE BOAT 2026

We would like to thank all of our racers and give special mention to family and friends who helped construct or supported the boats that raced on Saturday. We would also like to thank our volunteer judges, photographers and our fire/EMS service personnel who provided safety overwatch during the race.

In addition to the above, we would also like to thank NOPEC who awarded us a special community events grant which ultimately made this event and our Cardboard Boat Workshops possible. Last but not least, we would like to thank Todd and Rick of the Ashtabula Aarons who provided us with all of the construction cardboard utilized at our workshops.

Again, thank you for your participation and we truly look forward to seeing you again next year.

The Roaming Shores Police Department would like to announce our 8th Annual Lake Roaming Rock Cardboard Boat Race.

This year’s race will take place on Saturday July 4, 2026 and will again promptly start at noon.

In past years, all of those who have participated or attempted to participate in the boat race have come to understand the difficulties in securing the time and materials needed to construct a cardboard boat. In attempts to better secure materials and allow the necessary time needed for the construction of one’s boat, the Roaming Shores Police Department will again be hosting two Cardboard Boat Workshops scheduled for June 13th and June 27th from 12:00 to 2:00. The workshops will be held at the clubhouse, tentatively at the small pavilion by the covered bridge. During these workshops, the police department will provide cardboard and various assembly materials to all of those in the community who wish to participate in the 2026 Cardboard Boat Race.

If you have any questions, please contact the Roaming Shores Police Department at 440 563-3135 or by email at [email protected]

On four mornings in May, the Roaming Shores Police Department conducted child restraint awareness checkpoints at various locations within the Village of Roaming Shores. At this time, officers contacted 230 vehicles and issued 82 Safety Certificates to all children who were found to be properly restrained in seatbelts and/or car seats. Those who were found to be operating a motor vehicle without having a properly restrained child received verbal instruction and an informational warning card.

PROJECT HELPING HAND:

In conjunction with the Community Clean Up Day scheduled for May 2nd, 2026 and to further serve the community of Roaming Shores we would like to announce year four of Project Helping Hand. On May 1st, 2026, the Roaming Shores Police Department in partnership with the Roaming Shores Utility Department will be offering a helping hand to our senior residents who are physically unable to move or transport miscellaneous and unusable items from their residence to the collection site located at the Clubhouse.

Those who are eligible and wish to take part in this program must contact the police department prior to April 30th indicating the items in which you would like to have removed. Upon contacting the police department, an officer will schedule a date and time to visit your residence to determine how much of and if the unusable items can be removed. Following the inspection of the items, the officer will then place your name and address on a list citing the items to be picked up on the 1st.

If participating in Project Helping Hand you MUST be present at your given address from 9 AM to 1 PM on May 1, 2026 for pick up purposes. If you are not at the given residence during this date and time, the items will not be collected.
