Fall brings cooler temperatures and colorful fall foliage, but it also brings an increased risk of wildfires due to dry conditions, low humidity and fallen leaves, which act as a ready fuel source.

Roanoke County Fire & Rescue recently conducted a joint training exercise at the Kinder-Morgan and Buckeye industrial tank farm facilities. In addition to Roanoke County crews, Salem Fire & EMS and Cave Spring Volunteer Fire Department also participated.

During the training, crews completed a comprehensive review of the facility and its associated hazards, including large quantities of fuel, diesel, ethanol, butane, and other potential hazmat concerns. After a briefing and hazard review, the participating units were presented with a realistic emergency scenario. Crews then responded to the facility as they would during an actual incident, allowing for practical, hands-on training in a controlled environment.

Once the training was completed, the crews got a tour of the facility and got to see how things work up close.
Roanoke County Fire & Rescue is grateful for our strong working relationship with Kinder Morgan. Their continued support and collaboration play an important role in preparing our personnel, and we look forward to future joint training opportunities!

October 4-10 is National Fire Prevention Week. This year’s theme is focused on safely charging lithium-ion battery products (AKA, any product that is rechargeable) to reduce the risk of fires.

Our Community Outreach Coordinator, Laura Schneider, walks us through some helpful tips to lessen the risks of lithium-ion battery fires through safe charging practices.

If you notice a device is extremely hot and is accompanied by swelling, a weird smell, popping, cracking, or hissing sounds, or is starting to produce smoke, leave the device alone, evacuate, and immediately call 9-1-1.

Fire Prevention Week is finally here!

This year’s theme is Charge into Fire Safety, which focuses on safely charging anything with lithium-ion batteries (aka anything that is rechargeable).

Here are some helpful tips for now:

1. Charge products on a hard, non-porous surface to avoid overheating.

2. Use a manufacturer-approved charger or the charger that comes with the product.

3. Try not to overcharge products and monitor charging as much as possible.
