Remembering Rena Worthen: A Legacy of Preserving Family History
Botetourt County Libraries mourn the passing of Rena Worthen, who served as the librariesโ genealogist for more than 25 years. Throughout her career, Rena helped thousands of people discover their family roots, explore local history, and connect with the stories of generations past.
She was a trusted guide and teacher, assisting researchers from across the United States and around the world. She taught genealogy classes for the libraries, helping people at every stage of their research, from getting started to exploring advanced topics such as identifying maiden names and researching passenger lists.
Renaโs contributions extended well beyond the library. In 2001, she co-authored the third volume of Botetourt County Virginia Cemetery Readings with Margaret Tynan and Stephen Taylor. She worked with community members to photograph and document grave markers throughout the region, making this information accessible online and encouraging others to contribute their discoveries.
She also served as Botetourt County Coordinator for VAGenWeb and played an instrumental role in building and curating Botetourt Memory, the libraryโs digital collection dedicated to preserving the countyโs history.
Rena was a dedicated community partner, as well. She served as the point of contact for the 2007 Botetourt County Genealogy Fair, bringing together the Botetourt Genealogy Club, the Botetourt Historical Society, Fincastle Branch Library, and other regional partners to celebrate and preserve the areaโs history.
A Navy veteran, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Rena understood that behind every name, document, and grave marker was a story worth sharing. Through her research, teaching, and patience to help anyone who came to her with a question, she helped countless people find their connections to the families and places that shaped their lives.
Renaโs work will continue to guide researchers and preserve the stories of Botetourt County for generations to come. Her dedication to preserving our shared history leaves a lasting legacy, and she will be deeply missed.
