The Denton County Safe Room Rebate Program is now accepting applications! Eligible homeowners could receive 50% of the cost, up to $3,000, toward an approved storm shelter.

๐Ÿ“… Applications are open October 12, 2026, through April 2027.

โš ๏ธ Important: Don't purchase or install a safe room before receiving written approval from Denton County Emergency Management.

Funding is limited, and applicants will be selected through a random drawing.

Severe weather is a part of life in North Texas, and having a safe place to shelter can make all the difference!

๐Ÿ‘‡ Check out Denton County's original post below for program details, eligibility requirements, and application information.

Hey Hey Denton County,

๐Ÿ“ฃ Applications are now open for the Denton County Saferoom Rebate Program!

Two years in the making, this program was developed following the May 2024 storms and strong community interest in safe room assistance. We are thankful to the Commissioners Court for approving the resolutions that allowed us to apply for and receive funding to help eligible homeowners improve their protection from tornadoes and other severe weather.

๐Ÿ  Rebate: 50% of eligible costs, up to $3,000 per approved safe room.
๐Ÿ“… Application period: October 12, 2026, through April 2027.
โœ… Eligibility: Homeowners with eligible residential properties in participating areas of Denton County covered by our Hazard Mitigation Plan.

Funding is available for only 166 safe rooms. Applicants will be selected at random using a web-based random selection program and must meet all program requirements. Applying does not guarantee acceptance.

โš ๏ธ Do not purchase, contract for, or install a safe room before receiving written approval from Denton County OEM. Previously installed safe rooms are not eligible. Participants must pay costs upfront and submit required documentation for reimbursement, which may take several months.

Safe rooms may be above or below ground and must meet applicable FEMA and ICC standards, along with permitting and inspection requirements. Selected applicants are expected to be notified in April and May 2027 and will receive specific deadlines and instructions.

Contact Denton County OEM for application information or questions about whether your community participates.

Please share this post with your family, friends, and neighbors to help spread the word!

ELECTRIC VEHICLE FIRES: KNOW THE RISKS!

A recent electric vehicle fire in Fort Worth burned for more than 17 hours, highlighting the unique challenges of lithium-ion battery fires.

Unlike traditional vehicle fires, EV battery fires can produce toxic smoke, burn intensely, and even reignite after appearing to be extinguished.

A few safety reminders from the Roanoke Fire Department:

๐Ÿ”‹ Know the warning signs: Unusual heat, smoke, hissing sounds, or strange odors.

๐Ÿš— Charge safely: Use approved charging equipment and never use damaged cables.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Keep your distance: If a vehicle begins smoking or catches fire, move away immediately and call 911.

๐Ÿ’จ Avoid the smoke: Vehicle fire smoke can contain dangerous chemicals.

Electric vehicle fires are relatively uncommon, but understanding the risks can help keep you and our first responders safe.

Stay safe, Roanoke! ๐Ÿš’

Just a heads-up, Roanoke! Weโ€™ll be conducting our monthly Outdoor Warning Siren Test TODAY at 2:00 PM.

๐Ÿšจ This is only a test; no action is needed.

Our monthly tests help make sure all six of Roanokeโ€™s outdoor warning sirens are ready when we actually need them.

Enjoy this beautiful day, and donโ€™t let us scare you at 2!

Wellโ€ฆ thatโ€™s terrifying.

If you need a reason to pay attention to how you charge lithium-ion batteries, watch this video.

Lithium-ion batteries power things all over our homes: phones, laptops, power tools, scooters, e-bikes, toys, and more. When a battery is damaged, overheats, or is charged improperly, things can go bad very quickly.

Roanoke Fire Department wants you to remember a few simple charging rules:

๐Ÿ”Œ Use the charger that came with the device or one approved by the manufacturer.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Never charge devices on beds, couches, pillows, or other soft surfaces. Charge on a hard, flat surface.

๐Ÿ”‹ Unplug devices when they are fully charged.

โš ๏ธ Stop using a battery if it becomes unusually hot, swells, leaks, smells strange, smokes, or starts making popping or hissing sounds.

๐Ÿšช Keep larger items like e-bikes, scooters, and power tools away from exits while charging.

Lithium-ion batteries are part of everyday life, but they store a tremendous amount of energy in a small package.

Charge smart. A few simple habits can prevent a very scary situation.

๐Ÿ”‹๐Ÿ”ฅ CHARGE INTO FIRE SAFETY! ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”‹

Itโ€™s Fire Prevention Week, and this yearโ€™s NFPA campaign is focusing on something most of us use every single day, lithium-ion batteries.

Phones, laptops, tablets, power tools, e-bikes, toys, and countless other devices around our homes are powered by rechargeable batteries. They make life easier, but when batteries are damaged, improperly charged, or used with the wrong equipment, they can become a serious fire hazard.

Roanoke Fire encourages you to BUY, CHARGE, and RECYCLE safely!

BUY products from trusted manufacturers and look for certification from a nationally recognized testing laboratory.

CHARGE devices with the charging equipment designed for that product. Stop using batteries that show signs of swelling, overheating, leaking, or unusual odors.

RECYCLE lithium-ion batteries properly. Never put them in your regular trash or recycling bin.

This Fire Prevention Week, take a few minutes to look around your home. You may be surprised by just how many lithium-ion batteries your family uses every day.

Charge into Fire Safety because a little prevention can stop a big problem.
