No heating help this winter for needy seniors
Already the Local Office on Aging in Roanoke has received about 30 calls from people who need help. They've had to say no to each one after losing a grant from the Foundation For Roanoke Valley.

Roanoke Parks and Recreation Urban Forestry will give
away firewood-quality wood and wood chip mulch from 8 a.m. until 4
p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5 at the woodlot at Fallon Park.
The firewood has not been cut or split, and a loader will be
available. Those interested should bring a pickup truck or loadable
trailer and enter the park on the Wise Avenue side through the Tinker
Creek Greenway parking lot. All material is intended for end users,
not for sale.

Actually, during the month September, the 2-1-1 Virginia Southwest Center received 4,265 calls (1,286 of those from callers living in the Southwest Region) and the majority of those calls are for Housing & Utility assistance.
