Last week sixth grade students at Ben Franklin Middle School in Rocky Mount visited the school's outdoor classroom along Powder Mill Creek to conduct water quality testing. They tested for pH and dissolved oxygen and sampled benthic macro-invertebrates to determine the health of the creek.

For more than a decade, the Water Authority, Blue Ridge Soil & Water Conservation District, Ferrum College and the Blue Ridge Foothills Chapter Master Naturalists have sponsored this educational program providing hands-on learning for the students and a chance for them to learn about water stewardship.

🚧💧 What a great day at the Branch Girls in Construction Experience on Saturday!

We were excited to showcase our Sewer Vactor Truck and water meters while giving participants a hands-on look at the important work we do every day.

🚽 Kids learned what should (and shouldn’t!) go down the drain and saw the equipment we use to clear clogged sewer pipes.

💦 We also demonstrated our residential and commercial water meters, and participants learned how to identify and repair leaks!

We loved being part of this event and inspiring the next generation of builders, problem-solvers, and future leaders in construction. Thanks to everyone who stopped by and made the day such a success! 👷‍♀️👏

Update 10/15 9:45am - the break has been repaired, but Yellow Mountain Road at Welcome Valley Road is still closed while crews repair the pavement. Crews estimate that it will reopen around 5pm this afternoon.

Yellow Mountain Road SE is closed between Wellington Drive SE and Welcome Valley Road SE due to a water main break🚨

Expect delays and follow detour signs.

The Western Virginia Water Authority will shut off water to the area at 11 a.m. while they repair the break. Garden City Elementary School will dismiss at 11:15 a.m. today, Oct. 14, due to the water shutoff. Roanoke City Public Schools

Spring Hollow Reservoir was constructed by Roanoke County in the 1990s to provide additional water supply for the growing Roanoke Valley. The 990-foot-long dam was completed in 1993, and in May of 1995, the 3.2 billion-gallon reservoir reached full pond.

Today, this reservoir serves as an important water source for a large portion of Roanoke County and into Franklin County.
